Motiv: Primal Scream

54 Hook 15 Length 16 Breakpoint Shape

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Primal Scream is built to be very clean down the lane with a viscous backend motion on medium to heavy oil,” says Scott Hewitt of Motiv. “We modified the original Impulse core to bring the RG down from 2.60 to 2.55 on the 15-lb. model. This new Impulse V2 core provides the perfect amount of length so the Whiplash Solid Reactive shell can unleash on the backend of the lane.”

Core Design: The modified Impulse V2 symmetric core has a differential of .050. We experienced nearly 6 inches of track flare using stronger pinned layouts with lower quadrant weight holes. This core shape offers enough front-lane lope to provide great energy retention for when it leaves the oil pattern.

Coverstock: The solid Whiplash reactive cover is colored in neon green and black, with standout neo-graphics to enhance the overall look. It comes factory-sanded with 4000 grit for extended usability. The response off dry is quick, and oil traction is moderate. Despite supposedly being non-scented in nature, the Whiplash formula’s sweet “aroma” can be noticed from 5 feet away.

Test Results: We really liked what we saw from the Primal Scream in regard to versatility, carry power and its overall visual impression. It will fit neatly between the Primal Impulse (December 2011) and the recently released 2Cruel (August 2012). The new cover reacts similarly to a hybrid as it exhibits clean, easy length but rarely too much, except on heavy oil. It also reacts quickly and securely in the late midlane and back-end portions of the lane, even amidst nasty carrydown-laden conditions. We had great looks on most medium to medium-heavy oil volumes on fresh and beaten-up Sport and house patterns. Pay close attention to layout choice, as pins above the fingers create a much sharper hook than pins below the fingers.

When to Use: Use the Primal Scream whenever you find the need for a slightly later, strong-hooking solid reactive. Motiv has a firm grasp on what it takes to create both oil traction and dry traction, as well as providing both quick and slow responses off friction. The Primal Scream gives bowlers what many ask for from their favorite IBPSIA pro shop: a long and strong reaction for medium-heavy oil.
