New Mexico bowler finds individual success at 2014 WC

RENO, Nev. - A day after delivering the strike that secured the Diamond Team lead at the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, Shauna Shannon of Albuquerque, N.M., finished singles with 10 strikes to take the top spot in Division 1 All-Events.
The 35-year-old right-hander put together sets of 729 in singles, 687 in team and 662 in doubles for a 2,078 all-events tally at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, four pins ahead of three-time USBC Women's Championships titlist Joey Biondo of Carpentersville, Ill.
Shannon started singles Wednesday with games of 238 and 233 but opened in the first two frames of the finale, eliminating her from singles contention. She made the correct move after the two splits and struck out for 258.
"I started the last game with two opens and knew singles was off the table," said Shannon, who made her sixth Women's Championships appearance. "I just tried to make an adjustment after that. Missing to the right was out of bounds for me after two splits, so I focused on squaring up and ramping up my ball speed a little."
Unlike her team event Tuesday, where she knew she needed the first strike and good count to help Albuquerque's Some Strike It Hot into the lead for the fourth consecutive year, Shannon was unaware that she could move to the top of the all-events standings with a near-perfect final frame.
"I honestly had no idea," said Shannon, whose singles performance moved her into fourth place in Division 1. "Yesterday, I was getting nervous during the team event and was hoping I wasn't going to be put in that position. I'm glad and very thankful I was able to deliver, especially for the team. Today, I really wasn't thinking about it. I was just up there trying to make good shots."
Even after their success in the team event, Shannon and company had to stay on top of the moves as the lanes played differently than expected.
"I felt a little more relaxed today," Shannon said. "It was interesting coming back on the burn because it played completely different from last night. We had to change our game plan, change equipment and made a bunch of adjustments trying to get acquainted with the lanes."
Shannon knows all about the stressful wait that comes with taking the lead, having left the lanes atop the standings multiple times since 2010. She has one title to her credit, a Diamond Team win in 2012, and is pleased after another strong showing.
"I'm happy with how I bowled," Shannon said. "I made really good shots for the most part, adjusted fairly well and I'm happy about that."
Bowlers in Division 1 have entering averages of 190 and above.
