LAS VEGAS – Rob Gotterbarn Jr. of Garden City South, New York, was able to deliver 12 strikes in his final game of doubles Wednesday at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships to record his first honor score at the event after a previous close call on the tournament lanes.
The 33-year-old right-hander started with games of 247 and 226 to post a 773 series at the South Point Bowling Plaza, and he paired with Adam Chase of Ronkonkoma, New York, to move into a tie for seventh place in Regular Doubles with a 1,437 total. Chase, the owner of a 300 game in doubles at the 2021 USBC Open Championships, added 664.
Shawn Evans and Nicholas Fisher of Palm Bay, Florida, lead Regular Doubles with 1,531.
Gotterbarn’s first run at an honor score took place at the 2018 event in Syracuse, New York. After starting doubles with 259 and 266, he needed a double in the 10th for a chance at an 800 series. He recorded the first strike but wrapped a 10 pin on his second delivery to finish with 267 for 792, and the performance helped him to 17th place in Regular Doubles with Cristina Reale of Merrick, New York (1,387).
Gotterbarn also finished 14th in Regular All-Events in 2018 (2,095) and finished tied for 15th in Regular Singles during the tournament’s trip to El Paso, Texas, in 2015 (754).
This year, he concluded his 12th tournament appearance with 663 in singles and 601 in team for a 2,037 all-events tally at the Bowling Plaza.
Along with Chase, Gotterbarn also joined group member Gary Haines of West Babylon, New York, with a 300 at the Open Championships. Haines connected for his during singles at the 2018 event.
Gotterbarn’s perfect game was the 26th of the 2024 event, and it now stands as the 999th 300 all-time across the tournament’s 120-year history.
