NYS USBC awards $16K in scholarships

The New York State United States Bowling Congress has awarded $16,000 in college scholarships for the 2011-12 season, it was announced today. Ten graduating high school seniors were selected by a committee of NYS USBC directors.
The recipients will be honored at a presentation to take place during the NYS USBC Youth Team Championship awards luncheon on May 5 in Syracuse.
Colleen Moore of Deerfield received the top award – the $4,000 NYS USBC Scholarship. She will receive $1,000 per year, renewable for up to four years.
A USBC youth bowler for 15 years, Moore attends Whitesboro High School where she has held a 4.0 GPA for the past three years. On the lanes, she has a 152 average.
Other scholarship recipients are as follows:
-- Eric Donovan, Painted Post, $2,000. Donovan attends Corning-Painted Post West High School where he has a three-year scholastic average of 88. He carries a 199 average on the lanes and has a 300 game to his credit.
-- Casey Bechard, Queensbury, $2,000. Bechard is home-schooled with a 3.85 GPA. He holds a 210 average in competition at Broadway Lanes in Fort Edward.
-- Katherine Pike, Rochester, $2,000. Pike has a 3.90 GPA at Greece Odyssey Academy and carries a 190 average on the lanes.
-- Stephanie Lozada, Geneva, $1,000 Orange Sullivan Women’s 500 Club Award. A student at Geneva High School, Lozada holds a 94 scholastic average while carrying a 180 bowling average in both USBC youth and school programs.
-- Frank Schembari, Staten Island, $1,000 Hazel Fischer Memorial Award. Schembari has a 90 scholastic average at Xavier High School and also has a 186 average in his youth bowling league.
-- Jessica Thomas, North Babylon, $1,000. Thomas ranks fifth in her class at North Babylon High School and is an “all-league” bowler with a 158 average.
-- James Spinelli, Auburn, $1,000. Spinelli holds a 3.5 GPA at Auburn High School and has a 172 average on the lanes.
-- Dakota May, Conklin, $1,000 NYS USBC Youth Leaders Award. May holds a 3.69 GPA at Susquehanna Valley High School and has a 180 average in bowling. She also has a perfect game to her credit.
-- Timothy Barclay, Staten Island, $1,000 NYS USBC Youth Leaders Award. A student at Tottenville High School, Barclay has a 3.67 GPA. On the lanes, he has a 211 average with two 300 games.
