Ohio laneman receives Jim Jaryszak Award

ARLINGTON, Texas – Randy Hart of Sandusky, Ohio, was named the recipient of the 2019 Jim Jaryszak Laneman Award during Bowl Expo, held in Las Vegas this week.

Hart’s selection as this year’s recipient was announced by United States Bowling Congress President Karl Kielich, who presented Hart with the award along with USBC Senior Director of Certification and Specification Danny Speranza.

The Jim Jaryszak Laneman Award winner, which recognizes a person for their behind-the-scenes work as a laneman, is selected by the USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications team from submitted nominations. It is presented each year at Bowl Expo.

“It’s just an honor and a privilege to be around all these great people,” Hart said during the presentation. “To receive this award, I’m shocked.”

Hart, who works at Cedar Lanes in Sandusky, is a three-time winner of the Pat Patterson Award, presented by the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) to recognize individual contributions to the PBA Regional program.

Hart is known to be willing to explain lane patterns and how they should be played to PBA Central Region Players, and to put down PBA patterns for players who want to practice on tougher conditions.

As the PBA Player Services Assistant under USBC Hall of Famer Larry Lichstein, Hart perfected his skills with ball layouts. He also assists other local centers to fix lane machines and improve their lane patterns.

The Jim Jaryszak Laneman Award is named in honor of the USBC Research Manager who passed away in late 2010. Jaryszak was instrumental in setting up the USBC Sport Bowling program and served as the point person when the PBA was updating their animal patterns.

Past recipients include Sam Baca, the first Director of Lane Maintenance for the PBA, and Kegel founder John Davis.
