On the Lanes with Kreyer and Bohn

In the coming months, we'll talk with some of the best-known bowlers at the USBC Open Championships and get their thoughts on their time at the tournament and what it takes to succeed on the championship lanes.

KreyerAndBohn2011LARGEThis week, we heard from 2010 Regular Doubles champions John Kreyer Jr. of New Brighton, Minn., and Steve Bohn of Norwood, Minn.

On the way to their win, Kreyer led the way with an 816 series, and Bohn added 698 for a 1,514 total at the National Bowling Stadium.

Kreyer has enjoyed continued success at the NBS, averaging nearly 225 in four appearances there, including a perfect game at the 2007 event and a 299 in 2011. He is just one of 31 bowlers in tournament history to record both a 300 and 800 on the championship lanes.

Bohn consistently has put up solid numbers throughout his 10-year Open Championships career but has shined during doubles competition. He has averaged 210.1 in doubles, with an overall career average of 202.4.

This year, they will take to the lanes at the famed "Taj Mahal of Tenpins" on May 1 and 2.

Kreyer and Bohn answer 12 questions about bowling and the USBC Open Championships.

JOHN KREYER JR.

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS APPEARANCES: 12 (2002-2013)

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS TITLES: 1 - 2010 Regular Doubles with Steve Bohn

BOWLING BALL WEIGHT: 15

FAVORITE BRAND OF BOWLING BALLS: Brunswick/DV8

ONE all-time favorite host city: Reno, Nev. That's where I own my only OC title...as of now!

TWO best Open Championships memories: 1, In 2007, we took a family (10 Kreyers) to Reno to bowl the opening weekend of the OC, and I shot 300 the second day of the tournament; 2, In 2010, I shot 816 in doubles in route to an eagle! Afterwards, I got grief from my teammates for not finishing off a 300. In Games 2 and 3, I had the front nine and got stopped in the 10th twice, once by an 8 pin, and once by a 9 pin.

THREE keys to success at the Open Championships: 1, repeat shots; 2. stick with your basics (concentrate and follow through); 3, biggest one: listen to your teammates!

FOURgettable Open Championships moment: During the 2006 team event, I threw two gutter balls in one game on the first ball.

NINE other current/eligible bowlers you would choose to join you on your ideal pair of companion teams at the Open Championships: Matt McNiel, Chad Nelson, Dan Bock, Scott Pohl, Mike Rose Jr, Rick Miller, Andrew Cain, Jeff Richgels and Adam Ishman

TEN seconds or less, who is your favorite bowler of all-time?: Parker Bohn III

ELEVEN strikes in a row to start a game at the Open Championships, what's going through your head?: Concentrate and follow through....just like the 11th one.

TWELVE years from now, where do you hope to be in your bowling career?: Hopefully, still competing and bowling with friends and family. Just enjoying our sport!
