PBA World Championship Enters Final Stretch

Former PBA Player of the Year Doug Kent continued his quest to win a third PBA World Championship in the round of 32 Thursday with a clean sweep of Team USA member Nathan Bohr, winning four straight games in the best-of-seven match play format against Bohr with scores of 248, 241, 222 and 221.
Among those joining Kent in tomorrow morning's round of 16 will be Eugene McCune, Jason Couch, former PBA Rookies of the Year Rhino Page and Chris Johnson, and Dave D'Entremont. Johnson stunned PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber with a 4-0 sweep while McCune rode a high game of 289 to a 4-1 victory over Jason Belmonte.
This afternoon's match play will feature a "Super 16" format in which top seeds who received a bye after this week's qualifying rounds will enter match play to take on winners of round of 16 competition at 9am EST. Among the players to receive byes are reigning PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, 2009 PBA U.S. Open Champion Mike Scroggins, Chris Barnes, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Sean Rash and Mika Koivuniemi.
Similar formats will prevail in the Senior and Women's Series portions of the event where Ron Mohr and Kelly Kulick lead respectively. Competition for the Seniors and Women also begins at 9am EST today with a round of 8 followed by a "Super 8" round of match play in which players who received byes will compete against those who advanced out of the morning's round of 8 action. Players to receive byes in the Senior and Women's Series events include tournament leaders Ron Mohr and Kelly Kulick as well as 2009 USBC Queens Champion Liz Johnson, Harry Sullins, Kent Wagner, Michelle Feldman and Dave Patchen.
Among those who survived Thursday's round of 16 Senior and Women's Series match play competition are PBA Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, 2007 Women's World Champion Shannon O'Keefe, and PBA Hall of Famers Tommy Baker and Wayne Webb.
