Pennsylvania bowler rolls 298 at 2011 OC

RENO, Nev. - Richard Laub III of Norristown, Pa., recently decided it was time to pay more attention to his health, and the effort showed in his performance at the 2011 USBC Open Championships.
The 54-year-old right-hander made his 31st tournament appearance and turned in a career-best all-events total, which included a 298 game.
Laub started slowly with a 553 series in team Monday, but he bounced back with 713 in doubles before the pins at the National Bowling Stadium really started to cooperate. He closed with games of 196, 269 and 298 for a 763 singles set, also a personal best at the Open Championships, on the way to a 2,029 all-events total. Matt Weggen of Muscatine, Iowa, leads Regular Singles with 826 and Regular All-Events with 2,268.
"Yesterday, I felt like I was throwing the ball well, but I kept leaving 10 pins on one lane," said Laub, who bowls at Norristown's Facenda-Whitaker Lanes. "Today, I carried a lot better, and I was able to concentrate better than I usually do at home."
The final shot of Laub's 2011 tournament campaign looked good going down the lane, but the result was a 7-10 split and the sixth 298 of this year's event.
"I knew the last shot was wider than I wanted and would be a little light, but I was hoping for a break," Laub said. "A 7-10 is about the worst break I could've gotten. I was nervous, since I've never been that far in at this tournament, and by the time it was over, I was exhausted. Overall, it was a good year. I love coming here, and I feel like I bowled well."
Laub attributes his success to some recent changes in his life.
"I knew I was overweight, I was looking at having diabetes and I wasn't bowling well," Laub said. "So I got a new ball driller, lost some weight and practiced a lot more. Also, being in better shape helped strengthen my legs. You need your legs to bowl. I definitely felt a lot better this year."
