Penultimate Day

Just another happy dozen on the opening squad of the penultimate day. The roster calls for three squads today, 09:00, 13:00 and 17:00, then the top 24 will advance to tomorrow's final rounds.
Just to jog memories, the current number one is the ubiquitous Kamilla Kjeldsen from Denmark on 1333 and ten pins back is fellow Scandinavian Rebecka Larsen Jr. from Sweden. These are the only two to break 1300 so far, but with three squad scores yet to be posted maybe a 1400 could creep into the action.
No sooner said than done.....
Helen Johnsson, now from Helsingborg in Sweden after moving from Lund, put together a superb series of 1413 on this opening squad to take over the top position on the leaderboard.
After a lowly 178 in the third game, Johnsson put together an impressive 779 over her last three games and settle for that coveted 1400 series. Previous leader Kjeldsen had to let fellow countrywoman Mai Ginge Jensen take over the runner-up spot with 1391 and therefore dropped to third place in the overall standings.
"It is fun to bowl here," stated the new tournament leader. "I had a slow start for early in the morning but my last three games were very good. I arrived last night, so this is my first squad. In the past my work has not allowed me to compete in as many tournaments as I would like, but maybe in the future I will be able to do so and prepare for the 2011 Women's World Championships."
Currently, the cut for the top 24 to go into tomorrow's finals sits at 1148, a 191 average, and that spot is held by Rikke Holm Rasmussen from Denmark. fingers crossed that she makes it into the finals but if she doesn't make it to the semi-finals and final she will be punished by having to be co-commentator for the TV and web stream show on Sunday afternoon.
High games to date are a brace of 279s, one each from Johnsson and Nicole Sanders.
Now the pace is really hotting up and both remaining squads will be full of players well focused on getting to the top.
And that focus certainly worked for vibrant Dane Kamilla Kjeldsen. Yesterday she topped the standings with 1333 but today
she went 90 pins better to take over as numero uno with 1424, even bettering the 1413 set by Helen Johnsson on the early squad.
A pair of 256s were Kjeldsen's high games but with every ball slap in the 'pocket' she cruised to the top of the leaderboard with six great 200-plus games.
Asked jokingly what she had for breakfast this morning to produce such good scoring, she replied: "Just some fruit and some nice eggs. That's my secret. There are differences between the pairs of lanes, but after yesterday I had a game plan that worked really well for me. I knew exactly what to do when the lanes were changing so I was sure of what to do when the lanes were tougher. so it was easier for me today than yesterday. I did try a different ball than yesterday for the first game but I changed back quickly as I was sure that was better. It is easier for me to score well when I am sure of what I am doing.
"I really like this tournament, the only one on the calendar strictly for ladies. I like it that way. I'd like to see more up and coming players in the field so I will try to bring more from Denmark next year. This is really good experience for the younger girls."
So now Denmark and Sweden share the top four places but the final squad of 24 will take to the lanes and that squad features tournament favorite Clara Guerrero, determined to advance from her current ninth position in the standings.
A really good lane pattern for the girls has paid off with those in the top 24 all over a 200 average. The girls like it and not a single complaint has been heard.
We have been saying since the start of the tournament that Colombia's Clara guerrero is our favorite for the title and in this final squad she showed her true mettle, rolling the third 1400-plus for this qualifying day.
"After learning the lanes during yesterday's squad I made a lot of adjustments today and used different bowling balls, and that worked fine," said Guerrero. "Yesterday the corner pins were tough to carry but the changes I made today brought better scores."
The top 24 progress to tomorrow's final rounds, opening with two blocks of four games with 50 per cent of qualifying pinfall carried forward. Surprises for two well-known players not making the cut were sue abela of Malta and Sweden's Eva Jonsson. Jonsson missed out in 25th place by just two pins.
