Retro Roll: 1976 World Cup
May 13, 2011
With Team USA wrapping up a successful run at the PABCON Men's Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico this week, we take a look back at another international event: The 1976 World Cup in Tehran, Iran. Lucy Giovinco (now Sandelin) won the event at just 19 years of age and went on to become a 10-time Team USA member and win the USBC Senior Queens in 2007. But for all the accolades Sandelin has gathered in her career over the years, she still remembers her performance in Tehran as vividly as if it happened yesterday.
"I remember training for six months prior to the event," Sandelin says. "My coach at Hillsborough Community College was told that it was a long tournament and usually the fittest bowlers rose to the top, so we spent every day running at a local outdoor track. This paid off because I caught a head cold while in Tehran and felt that my legs never got tired even though I could barely breathe. Winning such a prestigious tournament put our college on the map, and we were able to secure scholarship dollars in 1977 for our entire women's bowling team. Winning this tournament gave me the confidence to pursue my dream of making Team USA."
