Retro Roll: Earl Anthony wins 1977 USBC Masters
If you're wondering why Earl Anthony beat out Walter Ray Williams Jr. for the top spot on the Professional Bowlers Association's list of the 50 greatest players in PBA history, look no farther than the 10 majors he won in his career. To this day, no one, not even Williams, has won more majors than Earl Anthony. Williams added an eighth major to his resume when he beat out Chris Barnes last year for the 2010 USBC Masters title. Back in 1977, though, Earl Anthony had some resume building of his own to do, winning his first of two USBC Masters titles. He would win his second Masters title in 1984.
Click below to watch the greatest bowler in PBA history put the pressure on fellow Hall-of-Famer, Jim Godman, who was no stranger to majors himself over his career. Godman won two Firestone Tournament of Champions titles as well as one USBC Masters crown of his own, but on this particular day there was no stopping the legend in his path.
