Rhode Island coach named USBC David Dahms Coach of the Year

Marty Jones of Providence, R.I., a USBC Bronze coach who works in the Rhode Island Youth Bowling programs, has been selected to receive the 2011 United States Bowling Congress David Dahms Coach of the Year Award by the USBC Youth Committee.
The award is named in honor of David Dahms, who was an instrumental leader in the creation of what is now known as the USBC Junior Gold program. The David Dahms award annually recognizes a USBC-certified coach who has been actively involved in a USBC Youth program and has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to coaching, sportsmanship and knowledge of USBC Youth rules for the last seven or more years.
Jones, who has been coaching for more than 13 years, said the award means the years of hard work and dedication toward improving youth bowlers in the Southern New England area has not gone unnoticed.
"Winning the David Dahms award means a great, great deal to me," Jones said. "Winning this prestigious award is something that I will cherish for a lifetime, but I plan to continue to grow as a coach and learn as much as I possibly can in order to further develop my students."
Jones has been named a Bowlers Journal International Top 100 Coach and encourages his youth bowlers to compete in Sport Bowling leagues. He ran a Sport league during the summer to help his athletes prepare for the major summer tournaments. The last seven female winners and last four male winners at the state Pepsi tournament have advanced through his organization.
In 2005, Jones formed a Sport Bowling league called "Filling da Frames" that was open to all bowlers in the southeast New England area. Since its inception, the Rhode Island area has been sending more athletes to the USBC Junior Gold Championships, and the league has led to the formation of other Sport leagues in the area.
"Kids from our area have been improving each year at the Junior Gold competition," Jones said. "I believe that is where one of my major influences has been, besides what I do within my own program. Over the last several years, I have seen a vast improvement in the talent level of our young athletes, both within my state and in neighboring areas."
Nicole Trudell, in her recommendation letter, said Jones strikes the right balance when it comes to teaching the sport.
"Coach Jones believes the sport should be taken seriously but also knows it needs to be fun," Trudell wrote.
Jones will receive the David Dahms Coach of the Year Award at the 2011 USBC Convention, which will be held at the Gaylord Texan hotel in Grapevine, Texas, June 29 through July 1.
