WATERLOO, Iowa – Eighteen bowlers advanced to the main field at the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Bowlers Journal Waterloo Open at Cadillac XBC after Thursday’s pre-tournament qualifier.
Malaysia’s Gillian Lim led the PTQ with a six-game total of 1,343 while Alisha Abdullah, also of Malaysia, was second with 1,308. Brooke Roberts of Port Orange, Florida (1,291), Gazmine Mason of Cranston, Rhode Island (1,289), and Kirsten Moore of Tallmadge, Ohio (1,279) rounded out the top 5.
Also advancing into the tournament proper are the following: Malaysia’s Nora Norkamal (1,277); Malaysia’s Natasha Roslan (1,264); Megan Allensworth of Plainfield, Illinois (1,260); Puerto Rico’s Fania Cobo (1,257); Jenna Williams of Lake Wales, Florida (1,237); Finland’s Peppi Konsteri (1,218); Canada’s Sarah Klassen (1,199); Margrette Jaklich of Tinley Park, Illinois (1,198); Hannah Fisher of Pleasant Hill, Iowa (1,184); Lauren Funk of Tripoli, Iowa (1,178); Mary Orf of St. Louis (1,161); Linda Burns of Indianapolis (1,159); and Nicole Kleutgen of Stevens Point, Wisconsin (1,149).
Roberts won the PWBA Albany Regional in March, bringing her extra confidence as she has started bowling on the National Tour.
“(The regional win) has built my confidence a little bit, knowing that I can compete with some of the ladies out here,” said Roberts.
The right-handed Roberts had a slow start during the PTQ with 189 and 179 before coming back with 214, 228, 225 and 256 to earn her spot into the main field starting tomorrow.
“I started outside and had a lot of over/under reaction,” said Roberts. “The third game I made a move left and made sure that I kept the ball in front of me, not giving away the pocket either.”
Now in the main field, Roberts’ goal for the rest of the tournament is simple.
“My goal is to have fun and enjoy the experience, I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself and just focus on one shot at a time like I did today,” she said.
Friday will see competitors begin qualifying with two six-game blocks at 11 a.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. Eastern, where the top third of the field will advance. Those bowlers will return at 10 a.m. Eastern on Saturday morning for an additional six-game qualifying block before the final cut to the top 12 for the fourth and final six-game block, which will start at 3 p.m. Eastern. The top five will head to the stepladder finals beginning at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Saturday evening.
All rounds of competition will be livestreamed on BowlTV.
