Rookie Bob Spaulding Averages 241.8 to Top PBA50 Northern California Classic Qualifying

Bob Spaulding of McKinney, Texas, who won the 1995 Quaker State 250 for his lone PBA Tour title, averaged 241.8 to earn top qualifier honors for the PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV Tuesday at Harvest Park Bowl.

Spaulding, a 53-year-old PBA50 Tour rookie who hasn’t competed in topflight professional competition since 1997, led qualifying with a 3869 16-game pinfall, bowling games of 189, 276, 258, 259, 213, 248, 278 and 222 in Tuesday’s second round.

“I’m basically having to learn everything all over again,” said Spaulding, who also finished second to Mike Aulby in the 1995 Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions. “Until a few months ago I’ve never bowled with this equipment. Everything’s different from the ball surfaces to the weight blocks to just about everything, so I’m pleasantly surprised at how well I’m doing.

“I have to say everybody’s been great out here and a lot of help so it makes everything all that much more enjoyable.”

Spaulding leads a field of 33 bowlers who will compete in Wednesday’s match play to determine the top five for the stepladder finals. All of tomorrow’s action can be seen on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame with finals coverage schedule to begin at 5:30 p.m. PT.

The Northern California Classic is the third PBA50 Tour tournament Spaulding has competed in this season, with a best finish of 16th in last week’s Fountain Valley Open.

Spaulding edged out PBA Hall of Famer, Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, by 12 pins; Monacelli logged a 3857 pinfall. Rounding out the top five were last week’s Fountain Valley Open winner, Brian LeClair, of Delmar, N.Y., 3742; Dave Arnold of Elk Grove, Calif., 3738; and first-round leader, Chris Warren, of Grants Pass, Ore., 3736.

Former major league all-star pitcher and PBA50 Tour rookie, John Burkett, made the cut, finishing in a tie for sixth with PBA Hall of Famer, Brian Voss, of Centennial, Colo., with a 3691 pinfall. It marks the fourth of five tournaments Burkett has made the cut, and he is hoping to improve on his season’s best finish of 15th in the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open.
