Senior surprise

Reigning PBA Senior Tour Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska suffered defeat in match play at the PBA Senior Northern California Classic today after a dominating performance in qualifying.

Senior Tour journeyman Ron Garr of Ridgedale, Mo. defeated Mohr in the Round of 16, sweeping his way to victory in the best-of-five match to move on to face PBA Senior Tour titlist Don Sylvia in the Round of 8.

But the biggest upset of the afternoon was Sammy Ventura’s victory over reigning Player of the Year on the regular PBA Tour, Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in the Round of 24.

Williams, who enjoyed a victorious debut on the PBA Senior Tour when he won his first senior title at the Miller High Life Classic in Mooresville, North Carolina last month, responded to a loss in game one with scores of 280 and 275. But Ventura, of Syracuse, N.Y., outlasted Williams in games four and five, defeating the PBA’s all-time titlist 231-194 and 247-245 to advance.

The PBA Senior Northern California Classic continues this evening with the Round of 8 at 5 P.M. PT, which is to be immediately followed by the Round of 4 and then the championship match.
