STRATFORD, N.J. (August 27, 2011) –
Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., defeated Matt O’Grady of South Amboy, N.J., 203-187, to win the Hurricane Irene-shortened Professional Bowlers Association East Region Mil-Ray Foods Open at 30 Strikes Saturday.

Shafer threw the final four strikes to force O’Grady to double in the 10th frame. O’Grady, who had lost his ball reaction, switched balls in an attempt to regain his carry, but the result was a 4-6-7-10 “big four” split, handing Shafer his 17th career regional title.

The tournament, originally scheduled to end Sunday, was shortened to a one-day event due to the impending landfall of Hurricane Irene. Shafer earned $2,500 for the win while O’Grady, who reinstated his membership on Friday prior to entering, earned $1,250 as the runner-up.

Shafer defeated John Furey of East Windor, N.J., 255-247, and O’Grady defeated Brian LeClair of Athens, N.Y., 257-224, in the semifinal round.

Furey and LeClair each earned $800 as semifinal round losers.
