Shultis wins PBA East Region title

Howell, N.J. – Gary Shultis of Levittown, N.Y., defeated Mike Tryniski of Fulton, N.Y., 280-226, in the championship round to win the Professional Bowlers Association East Region Howell Senior Open at Howell Lanes Sunday for his 19th career regional title and a $1,500 first prize.
Tryniski, a seven-time East Region titlist who is looking for his first senior regional title, earned $800 as the runner-up.
Shultis, a former East Region Senior Player of the Year, had a long battle to win after qualifying for the 16th and final position for the single-elimination match play finals by seven pins. As the No. 16 qualifier, he faced top qualifier and current Senior Regional Player of the Year Sammy Ventura of Syracuse, N.Y. in his opening match. After falling behind, 2-1 in their best-of-five-game contest, Shultis rolled consecutive 267 games to advance.
In his second match, he met three-time regional Senior Player of the Year Sam Maccarone of Glassboro, N.J. Maccarone won the first game in the best of three match, but Shultis again rallied with back-to-back victories to win that best-of-three-game contest.
In the semifinal round, Shultis defeated Kent Wagner of Palmetto, Fla., 258-193, while Tryniski defeated Eddie Wu of New York, 205-162, to set up the championship match. Wagner and Wu each earned $700 as semifinal round losers.
