Singapore's New wins PWBA BowlTV Open for third career title

Final Results

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio
– New Hui Fen of Singapore defeated fellow national teammate, Cherie Tan, 233-206, to win the Professional Women’s Bowling Association BowlTV Open at Yorktown Lanes in Parma Heights, Ohio.

In a rematch from last year’s BowlTV Classic title match where Tan won, it was New who came out on top this time to earn her third career PWBA title. But getting revenge wasn’t on New’s mind at any point during the run to the title.

“I was just focused on ball motion and seeing the right shape,” said New.

That level of focused helped New, who qualified as the No. 2 seed after going 9-3 in two rounds of match play and averaged over 233, eventually facing off against Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, in the semifinal match. Pluhowsky was making her way up the ladder after qualifying as the No. 4 seed in search of her fifth PWBA title.

Neither competitor in the semifinal match was able to pull away early as New opened in the second frame while Pluhowsky couldn’t string strikes together despite multiple good pocket hits. The second half of the match was a different story as New had five strikes from frames six through 10 and Pluhowsky started finding her groove.

It was too little, too late for Pluhowsky, however, as New closed out with 224 to Pluhowsky’s 217 to advance to the title match against Tan. Pluhowsky earned $4,000 for third place.

The Singaporean teammates started out even early on in the match, each notching three strikes in the first four frames before a split by New opened the door for Tan to pull ahead. Tan was unable to take advantage, however, leaving back-to-back 7 pins, which she converted, to put New back in the driver’s seat.

New would not miss the next five shots, effectively shutting out Tan before the final frame started, ending with 233 to Tan’s 206 to earn the trophy, title and $10,000 top prize. Tan earned $5,000 for her runner-up finish.

The other members of Team Singapore were right behind Tan and New during the title match, giving support to their fellow national teammates.

“When I’m standing on the approach, it doesn’t feel like I’m alone, there’s that feeling of having multiple people right behind me,” said New.

The BowlTV Open stepladder finals began with Pluhowsky and Jordan Snodgrass of Adrian, Michigan, in a match that came down to the final frame. Snodgrass began to pull away in the second half, forcing Pluhowsky to at least double in the 10th frame, which Pluhowsky did to finish with 225.

An untimely 2-10 split for Snodgrass in the 10th frame and a final total of 213 ended the match, advancing Pluhowsky. Snodgrass earned $3,000 for her fifth-place finish.

Next for Pluhowsky was facing off against Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, making her second straight stepladder finals after the PWBA Cleveland Open just two days ago.

Unfortunately for Kulick, she could not find her rhythm as she had three opens and only one double, bowing out with a 171 to Pluhowsky’s 211. Kulick earned $4,000 for her fourth-place finish while Pluhowsky took on New in the next match

With second event of the PWBA Summer Series behind her, New turns her attention to the PWBA Rock ‘n’ Roll Open that starts Sunday morning.

“It feels satisfying to have all this hard work pay off,” said New. “I haven’t really processed (the win) and now I have to reset and get ready for tomorrow.”

The Summer Series will end with the PWBA Rock ‘n’ Roll Open, where after two rounds of qualifying on Sunday at 10 a.m. Eastern and 5 p.m. Eastern, the top 16 advance to the single-elimination match-play bracket on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. Eastern. Matches will be best-of-five until the final four remain, where the semifinals and finals will be one-game matches.
