Singles semifinalists set at 2015 WBWC

Singles standings

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - The women bowlers from Korea picked up where their male counterparts left off a year ago, turning in a dominating performance Monday to earn the top two seeds for the singles medal round at the 2015 World Bowling Women's Championships.

Jeon Eunhee averaged more than 242 through six games at Zayed Sports City's Khalifa International Bowling Centre, closing with a 258 game to hold off her teammate, Hwang Yeonju, for the top spot in Wednesday's semifinal round.

Jeon finished qualifying with a 1,457 total, while Hwang turned in a 1,408 effort. Singapore left-hander Cherie Tan outlasted two of her own teammates to finish third with 1,395. The No. 4 seed came down to the final frame, but Shayna Ng of Singapore held on to advance with a 1,366 total, a 227.67 average.

At the 2014 World Bowling Men's Championships, held in the same center, Korea topped the medal table with eight medals overall, including four gold and four bronze.

Monday's singles competition featured 145 competitors from 29 countries.

Team USA's Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, was in contention for a spot in the medal round, but a 7-10 split in the final frame left her just short. She finished sixth overall with 1,354.

Johnson's teammate Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, finished 13th with 1,307 and was followed by Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas (35th - 1,247), 1999 singles champion Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey (49th - 1,215), Shannon Pluhowsky of Kettering, Ohio (50th - 1,215) and Shannon O'Keefe (95th - 1,133).

The singles medal round will take place Wednesday at 12 a.m. Eastern as Jeon takes on Ng and Hwang meets Tan in the semifinals. The winners will advance to the gold-medal match, and the losers each will earn bronze medals.

Competition at the World Women's Championships continues Tuesday at 12 a.m. Eastern with trios qualifying. All competitors will bowl six games, three on each of the event's two oil patterns, before the field is cut to the top four teams. The trios semifinals and final will immediately follow the singles final Wednesday.
