State champions crowned in Indiana

At the Indiana High School Bowling state finals held Feb. 19 at Cooper's Sport Bowl in Anderson, Ind., Huntington North took home the boys' title while Whiteland claimed the girls' crown.

The eight teams in each division, boys and girls, bowled two regular games then five Baker games in qualifying with the top four advancing to the stepladder finals. In the singles competition, the 18 competitors in each division bowled three games in the qualifying round with the top four advancing to the stepladder finals.

Huntington North claimed the boys' top seed in qualifying with a 3,057 pinfall total to edge Elkhart Memorial (3,012) and Terre Haute South (2,921). In the finals, No. 4 seed Lake Central took out Terre Haute South and Elkhart Memorial to reach the title match. But Huntington North put together back-to-back games of 215 for the victory.

In the boys' singles competition, E.J. Tackett of Huntington North (on left in photo) shot 734 to lead qualifying followed by Evansville Reitz's Matt Sanders (683) and Anderson's Brady Colip (660). In the stepladder finals, Sanders beat Colip, 241-184, to advance to the championship match. Sanders (on right in photo) took the title with a 290-218 victory over Tackett.

In the girls' team competition, Snider had a 2,686 pinfall total to edge Whiteland (2,609) for the top seed followed by Alexandria (2,558) and Portage (2,547). Whiteland would come back in the stepladder finals to beat Snider, 409-367, in the championship match.

John Glenn's Priyanka Nurkhalida (on left in photo) had a 630 series to lead the girls' qualifiers with Homestead's Sydney Brummett (581) taking the second seed followed by Amber Thompson of Decatur Central and Kayla Byrd of Whiteland. Brummett, who led the state with a 216 average this season, rolled in the stepladder finals. Brummett (on right in photo) beat Thompson, 237-165, and then took the title with a 265-177 victory over Nurkhalida.
