Storm: Don Carter Wise Man

51 Hook 14.5 Length 15.5 Breakpoint Shape

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Wise Man, with its CAM core and strong-polished cover, will offer less flare and mid-lane reaction that the Major 52 without any loss of energy,” says Larry Lichstein. “Both balls are designed so the core migration will continue even if the bowler lacks power at the release point. Core strength, along with the compatible coverstocks, will match up to the majority of axis tilts and rev rates. I have put my stamp of approval on these two pieces of equipment.”

Coverstock: The RDC Grab reactive coverstock is factory shined with a 2000-grit polish. Colors are a mix of deep blues and reds. The oil traction is limited, while the responsiveness off friction is quick and strong. The Ra level measured 1.6.

Core Design: The CAM symmetric design is similar in shape to the one used in the Reign series. However, the RG has been changed to 2.58 and the differential to .055. This core shape enhances late mid-lane motion.

Test Results: When compared to the Major 52, the Wise Man 51 was three boards less in total hook and 2 feet later, on average. The breakpoint shape also was more angular off the drier boards. We found that the balls offered a great 1-2 punch, with the Major 52 being the ball with which to start, and the Wise Man being the mop-up ball once the patterns broke down some. On lighter oil volumes, the Wise Man could easily navigate deeper inside lines and create enough angularity off the spot. It uses a strong cover formula and an aggressive symmetric core to provide ample flare and total hook.

When to Use: The Wise Man will be a great fit for those looking for later mid-lane motion on medium oil patterns. The box finish will suit speed-to-rev-rate matched players, as well as those with lower rev rates. Down-and-in players should employ longer pin distance drillings below the fingers to help control the breakpoint downlane. Those players looking to open up the lane can use higher drill-to-VAL angles. Our fave was a 70x4.5x40 dual-angle layout.
