Sutphin rolls 827 series at 2011 OC
RENO, Nev. - In seven appearances at the USBC Open Championships, Stephen Sutphin of Howey in the Hills, Fla., has been consistent, but has been overshadowed by his teammates at times.
This year, however, the 46-year-old right-hander made his own way into the spotlight with the first 800 series of the 2011 event at the National Bowling Stadium on Sunday.
He put together games of 290, 289 and 248 for an 827 series and added 684 in singles and 581 in team for a 2,092 all-events total, a career-best by 227 pins. He now sits second in Regular All-Events behind Steve Jakubowski of Temperance, Mich., who finished with 2,102 just a few lanes away.
Sutphin and his wife, Maria, combined for a 1,391 doubles total and moved into second place in Regular Doubles. Ed Seliga of Kenosha, Wis., and Chris Galovits of West Allis, Wis., lead with 1,408.
"About the fourth or fifth frame of the third game, I realized I had a chance to shoot 800," said Sutphin, who made his eighth Open Championships appearance. "I probably had one of the best looks I've ever had at the Open Championships. I had a great look last year, too, but I was unable to throw the ball in the same spot twice. Honestly, I don't even know how I threw the ball those last two frames of doubles. I've never been that nervous."
Sutphin's team, DAPP Too, includes 2009 Regular Doubles champion and Team USA member Brenda Padilla, who added a 300 game on the way to a 2,132 all-events total that year, the highest by a woman in tournament history.
Padilla was solid again this year, and her 1,804 all-events total helped DAPP Too into fourth place in Team All-Events with a 9,312 total. Michelle Rockwood added 1,866 and was followed by Crystal Schoneman (1,807) and Maria Sutphin (1,743).
Their companion team, DAPP Embroidery, includes 2009 Regular Doubles champion Stephen Padilla and Todd Minotti, one of 20 bowlers who have rolled two perfect games on the championship lanes (1997 and 1999).
Not to be outdone, DAPP Embroidery put things together as a team and set the bar in Team All-Events with a 9,911 total Sunday. Team All-Events combines the all-events totals of all five team members, and although there's no cash prize, it is arguably the most coveted title at the Open Championships.
Padilla led the way for DAPP Embroidery with a 2,028 all-events effort, which is sixth individually, and was followed by Mike Donahue (2,013), Butch Cormier (1,978), Minotti (1,948) and Bob Schoneman (1,944). Seligas Bowl Pro Shop of Kenosha, Wis., previously held the lead with 9,434.
DAPP Embroidery also is second in team with 3,191, Stephen and Brenda Padilla are fifth in doubles with 1,346, Schoneman and Cormier are eighth in doubles with 1,319 and Donahue and Minotti are ninth in doubles with 1,316. Donahue cracked the top five in singles and is fifth with 728.
"Everybody bowled well, this weekend," said Padilla, a coaching specialist for USBC, whose 1,566 doubles-winning effort with his wife is a tournament record. "The teams learned quite a bit the last couple of years, and we've really put it together. We know we are leaving with the lead, and we're certainly looking forward to keeping an eye on the leaderboard. We left a couple of spares out there but we still made good shots. It's always a lot of fun when this group gets together, and bowling well makes it even better."
Jakubowski managed to stay under the radar as Sutphin garnered most of the attention on their squad, which ultimately helped him stay relaxed and focused as he shot 744 in doubles and 670 in singles to go along with a 688 set in team Saturday night. Joey Kick of Middleton, Wis., previously held the Regular All-Events lead with 2,063.
"I saw Steve shoot 827, and I figured he'd be the guy to lead all-events," said Jakubowski, who is the bowling manager at Jug's Bowling Center in Toledo, Ohio. "I had no idea it ended up being me because I didn't know what he shot in the team event. I just bowled my own game, stayed focus and tried to keep everything simple."
The 49-year-old right-hander admits he has his ups and downs at the National Bowling Stadium, but is glad to leave the 2011 tournament on a high note.
"I've had my ups and downs here," Jakubowski said. "I've thrown a lot of shots here that weren't exactly perfect, and it seemed like a lot of times here, I had to be perfect. This weekend, I made some marginal shots that carried, so to put it in perspective, it just feels good to leave the Stadium on a positive note, and I'll be back in a couple of years."
