Team USA dominates mixed doubles at 2010 TOA

Team USA took five medals in mixed doubles competition at the 48th Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas on Thursday, grabbing gold in the Adult, Senior and Junior A divisions at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

The highest six-game total of the day went to the team of Elise Bolton and Kyle King, whose 2,560 just edged out the winning duo in the Adult division by two pins. The pair bolted out of the gate with a combined opening series of 507 and never looked back, averaging 213 for the day.

USA dominated the Adult division, taking both gold and silver. Emily Maier and Chris Bardol took the top spot with a total six-game pinfall of 2,598.

“Chris Bardol bowled great today,” Team USA Assistant Coach Bryan O’Keefe said. “He had a good game plan on the short pattern and shot about 640 on a brutal long pattern.”

Though the lane patterns have been particularly challenging this week, changing enough from day to day to prohibit bowlers from attaining much of a comfort zone, O’Keefe’s confidence in his bowlers has never wavered.

“They’re too good at this to be completely lost for a week,” he said. “When they see something day after day they are going to figure it out.”

Competition resumes today with the first six games of the team event. The tournament concludes tomorrow when medals will be awarded for team and all-events winners.
