Team USA member shoots 300 at OC
June 28, 2011
RENO, Nev. - In January, Jarret Mizo of Honolulu finished fifth at the 2011 USBC Team USA Trials and earned a coveted spot on Team USA for the first time.
This week, his success continued at the USBC Open Championships, where he made his tournament debut and rolled the 52nd perfect game of the 2011 event at the National Bowling Stadium. He also came within one shot of becoming the second bowler in tournament history with back-to-back 300s.
The 24-year-old right-hander closed out his doubles event with 12 consecutive strikes, switched to a different pair of lanes for singles and tossed 11 more before a 4 pin ended his run and left him with the 25th 299 game of the year.
Only 2003 Regular Singles champion Ron Bahr of Topeka, Kan., has rolled consecutive 300s on the championship lanes, while Kyle McCrackin of Wichita, Kan. (2002) and David Ferguson of Austin, Texas, (2006) each rolled two perfect games in the same year.
"I feel really lucky to have gotten the 300 because I didn't throw the best shots in the 10th frame," Mizo said. "It helps that my teammate told me what I was doing wrong, and that helped me slow down and throw better shots along the way. This is a really exciting accomplishment."
Mizo's 300 game Tuesday capped off a 738 doubles series, and he teamed with Daniel Miyamoto of Mililani, Hawaii, for a 1,375 doubles total. Brandon Tarabek and Chad Reiffer of Grand Rapids, Mich., lead with 1,497.
Years of experience as one of the country's top youth bowlers kept Mizo calm as he made his run at the record books. The former Junior Team USA member (2009) and 2006 Pepsi Youth champion finished singles with games of 209 and 228 for a 736 effort.
"I was really relaxed when we switched pairs for singles," said Mizo, who added a 620 series in team for a 2,094 all-events total. "We watched the people who were there before us and saw they were playing in about the same area. I just made a small move, and the shot was still there. I stayed relaxed until the 10th frame when I realized I had a real chance at back-to-back 300s. I've never done that before."
With 2011 already shaping up to be a great year for Mizo, he's hoping his success continues next month when he represents Team USA at the Tournament of the Americas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., July 31-Aug. 6.
