HONG KONG – Monday saw the completion of the first two rounds of Men’s Trios competition at the 2025 International Bowling Federation World Championships, which is taking place at Top Bowl, Kai Tak Sports Park in Kowloon, Hong Kong, China.
Team USA sent two squads to the post on Monday with the trio of Andrew Anderson of Chesterfield Township, Michigan; Packy Hanrahan of Wichita, Kansas, and Ryan Barnes of Denton, Texas, hitting the lanes first in Squad 1 and AJ Johnson of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Kristopher Prather of Romeoville, Illinois, and Chris Via of Blacklick, Ohio, following in Squad 2.
The two units enjoyed different levels of success, but both ended up in the same place by day’s end as neither was able to reach the semifinals to keep their Men’s Trios medal hopes alive.
Anderson, Barnes and Hanrahan, got the closest, qualifying fifth in the 56-team field and advancing to the Round of 16 thanks to a seven-game Baker trios score of 1,556 (a 222.29 average), which the group posted thanks to scores of 210, 213, 197, 216, 224, 289 and 207.
Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain that pace during Round 2, where they averaged 204 via games of 205, 224, 226, 140, 188, 209 and 236.
Those scores allowed the Team USA trio to post a match-play record of just 2-5, which caused the group to finish in seventh place in Group A and be eliminated.
Korea’s trio of Ji Geun, Kim Jun Yung and Baek Seung Min won the group with a record of 5-1-1 while James Blomgren, Joachim Karlsson Rosén and Pontus Andersson of Sweden won their last four matches to finish at 4-3 and secure the final advancing spot in Group A.
The semifinal berths up for grabs in Men’s Trios Group B went to Denmark’s Dan A. Østergaard, Niclas Sørensen and Nicolas Carter and Australia’s Julian Dinham, Luke Doyle and Blake Walsh. Both groups finished the Round of 16 with records of 5-2.
By making it through Monday’s first two rounds, the four advancing squads earned the right to compete on the final day of Men’s Trios competition, which will take place Thursday at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wanchai.
Johnson, Prather and Via had their sights set on representing Team USA at Queen Elizabeth Stadium; unfortunately, that goal went unrealized as the American squad posted games of 194, 212, 188, 221, 188, 216 and 196 during qualifying on Monday to finish with a seven-game mark of 1,415 (a 202.14 average) and land in 33rd place.
With the Men’s Trios semifinalists now determined, the first two rounds of Women’s Trios competition will take place on Tuesday.
Just as there were on the men’s side, two groups of three will be donning the red, white and blue for the women as well.
The Team USA squads will see Breanna Clemmer of Pikeville, Kentucky; Bryanna Coté of Tucson, Arizona, and Lauren Russo of O’Fallon, Missouri, compete in Squad 1 before Julia Bond of Lincoln, Nebraska; Jillian Martin of Stow, Ohio, and Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, hit the lanes with Squad 2.
Both units will be looking to qualify in the top 16 in the 44-team Women’s Trios field and then place first or second in their group during match play to advance to Thursday’s final day of trios competition, which also will be held at Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
But before the trios medals are determined, the focus will shift from three bowlers to five on Wednesday, which is when the first two rounds of Men’s Team and Women’s Team competition will occur.
The trios semifinals and finals in both divisions will take place at Queen Elizabeth Stadium on Thursday with the Men’s Team and Women’s Team semis and finals following in the same venue on Friday, which will be the last day of competition at this year’s tournament.
After the last balls have been rolled and the final medals have been awarded, the Victory Banquet will officially bring the 2025 IBF World Championships to a close on Friday evening.
