HONG KONG - With three games remaining in trios qualifying at the 2011 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Women's Championships, Team USA sits in fifth and seventh places.
The United States' Stefanie Nation, Shannon Pluhowsky and Shannon O'Keefe totaled 2,025 on Wednesday at Hong Kong Bowling City on the Seoul lane condition and are in fifth place. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Liz Johnson and Kelly Kulick shot 2,004 and finished the day in seventh.
Three final games of qualifying on the Paris lane condition will be contested Thursday before the field is cut to the top four teams for the semifinals and finals. All rounds are broadcast live on BOWL.com.
Pluhowsky led her trios team with a 735 series, while O'Keefe shot 657 and Nation added 633. Johnson fired 681, while Kulick totaled 663 and Dorin-Ballard had 660.
"We had a good start and the last pair was just a little tricky and that kept us from scoring higher," Pluhowsky said. "I think going into the long pattern we are in good position. We all have a good look on that pattern, so we are pretty confident."
Japan leads trios with 2,109, Korea is second at 2,099 and Denmark is third with 2,065.
In the all-events race, Mai Ginge Jensen of Denmark has a commanding 187-pin lead on the field with 3,710 for 15 games, an average of 247.33. Canada's Caroline Lagrange is second with 3,523, which included a 300 game Wednesday.
Kulick and Pluhowsky are tied for third with 3,512, while Dorin-Ballard is seventh with 3,442 and Johnson is eighth with 3,432.
The top 16 players in the all-events standings after 24 games advance to Sunday's final event, the match-play Masters. O'Keefe is 20th with 3,368, while Nation is 60th with 3,173.
The 2011 World Women's Championships features 171 bowlers from 33 countries. The teams are competing in six disciplines - doubles, trios, team, singles, all-events and Masters.
