HONG KONG – Wednesday marked the opening day of women’s bowling at the 2025 International Bowling Federation World Championships, and Team USA bowlers Breanna Clemmer of Pikeville, Kentucky; Bryanna Coté of Tucson, Arizona, and Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, made the most of their first opportunity to hit the lanes as each finished in the top 32 and advanced to the next round of Women’s Singles competition.
Pluhowsky authored the day’s strongest performance among American women, rolling games of 225, 203, 236, 191, 211 and 274 to finish with a six-game total of 1,340 (a 223.33 average), which was good enough for fourth place in the 132-player Women’s Singles field at Top Bowl, which is located in Kai Tak Sports Park in Kowloon, Hong Kong, China.
Clemmer was next in line for Team USA, finishing 12th with a 1,283 total. The talented right-hander from Kentucky got there by breaking 200 during five of her six games on Wednesday (204, 235, 226, 226, 245).
Coté also was able to reach the 200 mark five times during Round 1 (200, 206, 212, 221, 248), and that allowed her to post a six-game score of 1,254 and qualify 18th.
The opening-round lead was secured by Karen Kaergarrd Nielsen of Denmark, who used a 279 in Game 1 and a 278 during Game 5 to post a field-best 1,437 total (a 239.5 average).
Second place went to Swedish two-hander Nora Johansson, who finished just 13 pins behind Nielsen with 1,424.
The remaining spots in the Round 1 top five went to Korea’s Kim Bo Ah (1,392), Pluhowsky and Singapore’s New Hui Fen, who shot 300 during Game 4 en route to a fifth-place total of 1,330.
The final berth in Thursday’s Women’s Singles Round of 32 went to Shayna Ng of Singapore, who grabbed the last qualifying position thanks to a six-game mark of 1,211 (a 201.83 average).
While Pluhowsky, Clemmer and Coté were able to finish Wednesday’s block inside the cut line, Team USA’s other three women’s competitors – Julia Bond of Lincoln, Nebraska; Jillian Martin of Stow, Ohio, and Lauren Russo of O’Fallon, Missouri – were left on the outside looking in.
Bond finished 47th on Wednesday, recording a six-game total of 1,170 thanks to high games of 204 and 223.
Martin finished strong, shooting 206 during Game 5 and 289 in Game 6; however, those efforts only got her to 1,143 on the day, which put Martin in 61st place.
Russo landed four spots behind Martin, starting with 200 and finishing with 230 to place 65th with a mark of 1,129.
Thanks to their strong performances on Wednesday, Clemmer, Coté and Pluhowsky kept their Women’s Singles medal hopes alive just as their Team USA teammates Ryan Barnes of Denton, Texas, and Packy Hanrahan of Wichita, Kansas, did one day earlier during Men’s Singles competition.
According to Pluhowsky, even though they were participating in the singles event, much of Wednesday’s successes could be attributed to teamwork.
“We all stayed patient and communicated what we were seeing and feeling out on the lanes,” Pluhowsky said. “That allowed us to commit to our shots and make better choices, which is ultimately what helped the three of us move on to the next round.”
Thursday will mark the final day of singles competition at the 2025 IBF World Championships with Round of 32, semifinal- and final-round action taking place in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
After the singles medals have been awarded, athletes will pair up and prepare for the start of doubles.
The doubles competition will see the women qualify first, bowling on Friday, with the men following on Saturday. The final three rounds of doubles in both divisions will be held on Sunday.
The final two events of the 2025 IBF World Championships will be trios and team.
The first two rounds of Men’s Trios will occur on Monday with Women’s Trios following on Tuesday.
The focus will shift from three bowlers to five on Dec. 3, which is when the first two rounds of Men’s Team and Women’s Team competition will occur.
The excitement is sure to reach a fever pitch during the last two days of competition when the action moves from Top Bowl to Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wanchai.
The trios semifinals and finals in both divisions will take place at Queen Elizabeth Stadium on Dec. 4 with the Men’s Team and Women’s Team semis and finals following on Dec. 5, which will be the last day of competition at this year’s tournament.
After the last balls have been rolled and the final medals have been awarded, the Victory Banquet will officially bring the 2025 IBF World Championships to a close on the evening of Dec. 5.
