MELAKA, Malaysia -
Team USA's Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Tennelle Milligan got off to a slow start Monday in the opening round of qualifying at the 2009 QubicaAMF World Cup.

With eight of 24 qualifying games completed, Williams was in 36th place with 1,617, while Milligan sat in 15th place with 1,607 at Melaka International Bowling Center. Competition continues Tuesday with the second of three eight-game qualifying blocks.

Williams never got into a rhythm and had games ranging from 188 to 226 for the first seven games but struggled in the final game with 159.

"I just didn't throw the ball well, and I never really got comfortable with the look I had early," Williams said. "I felt really good coming into today, so that makes it even more disappointing. There's a long ways to go. I'm not too far behind, but I'm not where I wanted to be."

Canada's Michael Schmidt, the 2005 World Cup champion, led the men's field with 1,880, an average of 235 a game. Korea's Choi-Yong-Kyu was second with 1,878, while Martin Larsen of Sweden is third with 1,838.

On the women's side, Milligan started strong with a 269 game, opening with a spare and rattling off eight consecutive strikes before making another spare in the final frame. But after that game, she struggled to string together strikes and her next highest game was 205.

"I thought I threw the ball better than I scored most of the day," Milligan said. "Now it's a matter of figuring out what wasn't right and how to fix it so I can score better the next two days."

Zara Giles of England leads the women's field with 1,805, an average of better than 225 per game. Russia's Evgenia Tsarkova sits in second place with 1,751, while Joey Yip of Hong Kong is third with 1,724.

All participants will bowl 16 additional games of qualifying over the next two days with the top 24 men and top 24 women advancing to eight more games Wednesday night. The top eight men and top eight women then advance to Thursday, where the field will be paired down to the top three men and top three women for the semifinals and finals.

USBC will partner with BowlingDigital.com to provide live streaming coverage of the semifinals and finals on BOWL.com on Thursday beginning at approximately Midnight Eastern (9 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday). Earlier rounds may be streamed live if possible.
