HONG KONG – Two Team USA squads advanced to the Women’s Trios Round of 16 at the 2025 International Bowling Federation World Championships on Tuesday, but both were ousted during that stage and eliminated from medal contention at Top Bowl, which is located in Kai Tak Sports in Kowloon, Hong Kong, China.
The day got off to a successful start for the Americans as the group of Julia Bond of Lincoln, Nebraska; Jillian Martin of Stow, Ohio, and Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, qualified third in the 44-team field with a seven-game Baker total of 1,500 (a 214.29 average), which included scores of 214, 201, 244, 180, 195, 265 and 201.
Team USA’s other women’s trio, Breanna Clemmer of Pikeville, Kentucky; Bryanna Coté of Tucson, Arizona, and Lauren Russo of O’Fallon, Missouri, was close behind, placing fourth with 1,484 (214, 260, 200, 225, 181, 224, 180).
Unfortunately, the tide would turn during the Round of 16.
Clemmer, Coté, and Russo started off strong, winning their first three matches thanks to scores of 211, 211 and 210; however, they finished under the 200 mark and lost their final four bouts to end the round with a 3-4 record and fifth place in Group A.
Bond, Martin and Pluhowsky, meanwhile, won matches with scores of 208, 178, 248, 232 and 254 to post a 5-2 mark and finish in a three-way tie with Japan and Macao for second place in Group B.
That forced the three squads to get back on the lanes for a one-game roll-off to determine which group would be moving on to the Women’s Trios semifinals.
Many bowling fans would have considered Team USA the favorite, but Japan stole the show, rolling a 211 as Macao came in with 174 and the Americans managed just 155.
That performance allowed Japan’s trio of Kiri Watanabe, Shion Izumune and Yuri Sato to join first-place Finland (Ani Juntunen, Peppi Konsteri and Essi Pakarinen) as the semifinalists from Group B.
The two teams advancing out of Group A were Denmark’s squad of Karen Kaergarrd Nielsen, Mika Guldbæk and Megan Gales Dicay and Sweden’s Nora Johansson, Anna Andersson and Hanna Engberg.
By punching their tickets to the semifinals, the groups from Finland, Japan, Denmark and Sweden earned the right to compete on the final day of Women’s Trios competition, which will take place Thursday at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wanchai.
The Men’s Trios semifinals and finals will take place at Queen Elizabeth Stadium on Thursday as well and will pit Korea against Sweden in one semi while Denmark and Australia do battle in the other.
With both its men’s and women’s squads eliminated from trios action, the 12 Team USA bowlers in Hong Kong will set their sights on the tournament’s most coveted event, the team competitions.
The first two rounds of Men’s Team and Women’s Team competition will take place at Top Bowl on Wednesday with only four teams remaining in contention in each division at day’s end.
Those eight squads will head to Queen Elizabeth Stadium and compete in the Men’s Team and Women’s Team semifinals and finals on Friday, which will be the last day of competition at this year’s tournament.
After the last balls have been rolled and the final medals have been awarded, the Victory Banquet will officially bring the 2025 IBF World Championships to a close on Friday evening.
