Texas crowns high school champions

EULESS, Texas - Led by Kayla Endicott, the Stony Point Lady Tigers captured their first Texas High School Bowling Club girls' state title by defeating McKinney Boyd, 179-157 and 196-184. The state tournament was held at AMF Euless Lanes on March 24-25.

Stoney Point girlsSA Taft boysThe Lady Tigers were the top seed after the qualifying round while McKinney Boyd, which had the highest team average entering the tournament (183), earned the No. 6 seed. Stony Point dispatched Canyon (Comal), 190-158 and 198-171, in the semifinals while McKinney Boyd defeated San Antonio O'Connor, 183-137 and 169-168, to set up the championship match.

Endicott not only led her team but also led the tournament in scoring during the qualifying round with a three-game set of 746 (248 average), which included a 299 game. During Baker match play, where each of the five-member team bowls only two frames each game, she rarely had anything but a strike. It was by far the most dominating performance of the tournament.

Stony Point team members are: Brittany McClure, Crystal Reese, Laura Trimble, Krista Hill, Rachel Kata and Kayla Endicott. The Lady Tigers are coached by Steve Traynor.

The San Antonio Taft Raiders captured the boys' state team title, defeating No. 5 seed Harker Heights Knights (Killeen) in a high scoring final, 266-224 and 227-193. Taft qualified as the No. 3 seed.

In the semifinals, Taft rolled over The Colony, 245-198 and 226-193, while Harker Heights topped defending champion Pearland, 256-159 and 193-147, to set up the championship match.

In the singles title matches, Harrison Jarvis of San Antonio Madison, last year's state runner-up, captured the boys' title with a thrilling victory over Mason Edmondson of Amarillo.  The bowlers tied at 247 in the single-game match final, and then both struck in the first single-ball roll-off.  In the second roll-off, Jarvis won the title with a strike while Edmondson had an 8-count.  In the highest-scoring tournament on record, it took a 225 average to make the cut to the top 16, and 11 of the top 16 scored a 700 series (233 average) or better.

Brianne Hansen of McKinney Boyd edged Kayla Endicott of Round Rock Stony Point, 227-202, to win the girls' title. The girls' scoring was the highest in the 11-year history of the Texas High School Bowling Club. Sixty-five girls competed in the qualifying round and it took a 210 average to make the cut to the top 16. Three girls topped 700 (233 average) in the three-game qualifying set.
