Top events scheduled for El Paso
March 09, 2010
The USBC Women's Championships isn't the only major event scheduled for El Paso in 2010. The arena venue at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center will host two other major tournaments in April.
On April 14-17, the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships will bring in the top 16 men's teams and top 16 women's teams to compete for a national title. The ITC was first contested in 1975. Wichita State took both the men's and women's title in 2009.
To qualify for the national event, a team must compete in certified collegiate tournaments and conferences throughout the season. Teams that win their conference, or are one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, advance to sectional qualifying. The top four men's teams and top four women's teams from each of the four sectional tournaments earn berths to the ITC.
At the ITC, teams will bowl 32 qualifying games using the Baker format. In the Baker format, all team members follow each other in regular order to bowl a single game. Teams will then compete in best-of-seven Baker-format matches and use a double-elimination format through the semifinals.
The championship round for both the men's and women's teams will be a best-of-three Baker format. The championship round will be taped April 17, and is scheduled to air on ESPN2 on May 5.
Less than a week after the conclusion of the ITC, one of the top women's tournaments will roll into El Paso.
The 2010 USBC Queens, scheduled for April 23-28, brings together the top amateur and female bowlers in the world competing for a share of the $180,000 prize fund. The winner takes home $30,000. And Storm, the official bowling ball company of the Queens and Senior Queens, is providing a $10,000 bonus for any person who bowls a 300 game on the televised program.
Competitors will bowl 10 qualifying games before the field is cut to the top 25 percent. After an additional five qualifying games, the top 63 qualifiers plus Liz Johnson, the 2009 champion, will advance to double-elimination match play. Each match will consist of three games with the highest total advancing.
The stepladder finals will include the four finalists from the winners' bracket and the winner of the contenders' bracket. The stepladder finals will be televised live by ESPN2 on April 28.
The USBC Senior Queens, for female USBC members who have reached age 50, will be held alongside the USBC Queens. Janine Primrose is the defending champion.
