U.S. doubles teams roll at Tournament of the Americas

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Team USA duo of AJ Chapman and Chris Colella easily rolled to the Adult Men’s title in doubles competition at the 53rd Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Sunrise, Florida, on Wednesday while Erin McCarthy and Kayla Johnson slipped past Brazil for the Adult Women’s title.

The United States team nearly swept the one-day doubles event at Strikers Lanes in which each player on the team bowled six games and the combined pinfall total determined medalists.

The four Junior Team USA members took the titles in the Junior A (ages 16-19) division. Julia Bond, above, and Jadee Scott-Jones had a 2,610 total to beat Colombia by 273 pins. Michael Coffey, coming off a record-setting performance in singles, teamed with Kenny Ryan for a 2,537 total to edge Osvaldo Rosado and Jorge Rodriguez of Puerto Rico (2,475).

The Senior U.S. teams won handily, as Craig Auerbach and Mark Porter won the men’s title by more than 300 pins while Brenda Burns and USBC Hall of Famer Tish Johnson rolled to a 522-pin victory in the women’s division. Kristy Whitcher and Sharon Powers of the U.S. teamed to edge Canada by 27 pins in the Super Senior Women (age 55-plus) division, and John Katsaros and Clark Poelzer combined for a 2,499 total to win the Super Senior Men (age 60-plus) title.

Puerto Rico’s Kiara Vargas and Pamela C. Perez totaled 2,184 to edge the U.S. duo of Ashley Channell and Brogan Zengel by 58 pins for the Junior B (ages 12-15) Women’s title.

The Mixed Doubles competition will take place Thursday, with the team competition scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
