Tournament host Sam Houston State got off to a slow start in the championship match of the Track Kat Klash but rallied for a 4-1 victory against Wisconsin-Whitewater to successfully defend its title at Huntsville Lanes in Huntsville, Texas, on Sunday.
The Warhawks opened the match of the NCAA event with a 214-163 victory, but it was all Sam Houston State after that as the Bearkats rolled to wins of 212-202, 204-191, 218-217 and 192-158.
SHSU combined upperclassman leadership with key shots from younger players to pick up its third win in five events this season. Along the way, the Bearkats compiled a tournament-best 12-1 record, defeating Valparaiso and Arkansas State on the way to the final.
“We were hopeful coming in, but even if it’s on our home turf, we weren’t expecting anything,” SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. “The biggest thing is that we made shots when we needed to. We also have amazing team chemistry. The upperclassmen are terrific leaders, and the younger players all fit into our program very well. This is a great way to end the semester.”
Top-seeded Vanderbilt, which fell to Whitewater in the semifinals, finished third with a 4-0 victory against Arkansas State. The Commodores posted wins of 227-191, 187-180, 226-191 and 280-204 for the sweep.
The three-day tournament started Friday with five sets of quad Baker matches (two teams bowled four Baker games, with total pinfall determining the winner). On Saturday, all 16 teams bowled five traditional team games. Each match counted toward the teams’ overall season records, while the total pinfall from the first two days of competition seeded the teams into Sunday’s brackets.
Vanderbilt won nine of 10 matches and cruised to the top seed with a 9,461 total, nearly 400 pins ahead of Arkansas State (5-5, 9,081). Defending champion Sam Houston State was third (9-1, 8,971), followed by Nebraska (8-2, 8,959).
Vanderbilt’s Amanda Fry averaged 239 (1,196 for five games) to take individual honors followed by Arkansas State’s Sarah Lokker (1,093) and Louisiana Tech’s Elizabeth Eldredge (1,091).
Robert Morris-Illinois, Midland win
Warhawk Open
The Robert Morris-Illinois men’s team continued its amazing run, winning its eighth consecutive tournament this season, while Midland edged the Robert Morris women’s team for the title at the Warhawk Open held at Bowl-A-Vard and Prairie Lanes in the Madison, Wis., area.
Robert Morris topped the 24-team men’s field with a 9,392 pinfall total followed by St. Ambrose (9,114), Nebraska (9,013), Midland (8,893) and Viterbo (8,792). Kyle King of Robert Morris took top individual honors led all individuals with a 1,110 pinfall total over five games.
In the 19-team women’s field, Midland held off a furious finish by Robert Morris to win by 11 pins, 8,628 to 8,617. Viterbo (8,441) was third followed by William Penn (8,338) and Robert Morris-Peoria (8,198). Midland’s Katie Maher topped the individual results with 1,110 over five games. Robert Morris-Peoria’s Courtney Wolf (1,084) was second and Viterbo’s Rachel Schalow (1,082) was third.
In other events:
– William Paterson topped Rochester Institute of Technology in the 19-team men’s field at the Shippensburg Classic held at ABC Lanes West in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Alma College won the women’s title. Matt Moward of Robert Morris and Jessica Cords of Alma led the individual results.
– The University of Northwestern Ohio edged Wright State for the men’s title at the Cardinal Baker Classic held at Munsee Lanes in Muncie, Ind. Wright State won the women’s title.
– St. Francis swept Ursuline in the title match to win the Red Flash Invitational, an NCAA event held at Holiday Bowl in Altoona, Pa. Marissa Matassa of St. Francis was the top individual performer.
– Top qualifier Central Missouri beat Sacred Heart to capture the Virginia Union Invitational held at Bowl America Southwest Lanes in Midlothian, Va. Central Missouri’s Gabriella Mayfield took individual honors.
– Maryland Eastern Shore went 1-0 to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Meet held at AMF Chesapeake in Chesapeake, Va. Megan Buja of UMES averaged 241.
