El Paso association leader appointed to USBC board
Karl Kielich of El Paso, Texas, has been appointed to the USBC Board of Directors. Kielich will fill the final two years of the board position previously held by Carolyn Dorin-Ballard.
Kielich, 37, currently is president of the El Paso USBC. He has been a member of the El Paso USBC/El Paso Bowling Association board for more than 14 years and was involved with the local promotion of the 2010 USBC Women's Championships in El Paso. He was inducted into the El Paso USBC Hall of Fame in 2008.
SMART Scholarship Corporation selects investment firm
Directors of the SMART Bowling Scholarship Funding Corporation have selected Asset Strategy Consultants of Hunt Valley, Md., as the investment advisory firm for the SMART Fund. The SMART Corporation is a financially and legally independent entity formed last year by USBC to protect, manage and promote youth bowling scholarships.
The SMART Board selected Asset Strategy Consultants after reviewing many proposals and interviewing five highly qualified firms. Services provided by Asset Strategy Consultants will include the development of investment policies and procedures, asset allocation strategies and performance evaluation of investment managers.

Sport Bowling league trains at ITRC
Skip Pavone had a hunch that it was time to try something new in the Cambrian Sport League he runs at Cambrian Bowl in San Jose, Calif. After a visit to Bowling's International Training and Research Center, he had an idea he pitched as "the bowling experience of a lifetime," and the bowlers agreed.

USBC Gold coach Nyitray named USOC Developmental Coach of the Year
USBC Gold coach Michael Nyitray of Parkland, Fla., has been named the United States Olympic Committee 2010 Developmental Coach of the Year, giving the sport of bowling its first national coaching award from USOC.
U.S. Olympic and Pan American sports organizations selected their 2010 Coaches of the Year as part of the USOC Coach of the Year Recognition Program. The finalists in each category were chosen by a panel of coaching and sport education professionals.

USBC test robot E.A.R.L. makes engineering headlines
USBC test robot E.A.R.L. recently made headlines as the cover story of Design News magazine's Mechatronics supplement. Design News is a leading technical resource, providing technology news, opinion, and analysis, for engineers and engineering managers. The article detailed how designers created E.A.R.L. (Enhanced Automated Robotic Launcher) with the ability to release a ball with precise accuracy under a wide range of velocity, loft and axis rotation variables.

U.S. Women's Open breaks record for attendance
The Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) and Cowboys Stadium announced that history was made at the 2011 Bowling's U.S. Women's Open.
The two organizations reported that the groundbreaking finals - which were played at the 50-yard line of Cowboys Stadium on Thursday, June 30 - set a world record with 8,017 individuals in attendance, breaking the previous mark of 7,212 set at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit in 1995.
The record-breaking number was confirmed after a thorough audit of the ticketed fans. For more information on this event, click here.
Faulkner, Jimenez claim Junior Gold titles
Gary Faulkner of Memphis, Tenn., and Natalie Jimenez of Rowland Heights, Calif., won national titles last month, taking the top spots at the 2011 USBC Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick.
Both players rolled to their respective victories at Sunset Station's Strike Zone with little drama down the stretch. They came out on top against 1,648 USBC Youth bowlers who started the event.
The top four boys and top four girls in the final standings earned automatic spots on Junior Team USA 2012 and two at-large coaches' picks for both divisions were announced. Click here to see who earned a spot on Junior Team USA and for full results of the 2011 Junior Gold Championships.
USBC Youth Open has its first 800 series, perfect games
A record-setting performance by Tristan Musick highlighted the 2011 USBC Youth Open, which wrapped up competition July 24 at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
Musick, of Olathe, Kan., who was competing in his first USBC Youth Open, had games 256, 248 and 299 for an 803 series during singles competition on July 8. It was the first 800 series rolled in the history of the USBC Youth Open, which started in 2007
More than 2,000 USBC Youth members participated in the tournament that started July 8 and Musick wasn't the only one to roll the first honor score at the Youth Open.
Dan Reinke of New Ulm, Minn., had his first certified 300 game during team competition on July 14. It was the first perfect game in Youth Open history. Two days later, Junior Team USA member Jacob Kent of Newark, N.Y., rolled a perfect game during team competition.

Greene, Hannon take titles at North Pointe titles
Tylor Greene of Davidson, Mich., and Melanie Hannon of Buffalo, N.Y., claimed the top spots at the 2011 North Pointe High School Singles Championships and each took home a $15,000 scholarship.
Both players survived the drama-filled match play portion of the event en route to victory at Red Rock Lanes. They came out on top against 588 other top high school bowlers from across the country.
The North Pointe $100,000 High School Singles Championships is the premier high school singles event in the nation. Open to all high school athletes, the tournament is a Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) event sponsored by the North Pointe Insurance Group.
