Industry unites for youth league promotion
8 for 8 Bowling Club includes 8 weeks of bowling and a new ball for $8 per week
The bowling industry is uniting to promote and launch the national "8 for 8" Bowling Club promotion this fall in an effort to introduce more children under the age of 12 to the sport. The program gives kids the opportunity to participate in an 8-week league for $8 per week and includes a custom-fitted ball and a basic United States Bowling Congress Youth membership.
The "8 for 8" program is a partnership of the International Bowling Campus in conjunction with Brunswick and Ebonite International. Brunswick and Ebonite have agreed to provide balls for the program at a discounted price to participating Bowling Proprietors' Association of America centers through Strike Ten Entertainment.

USA Bowling Coaching to offer seminars
For youth bowling coaches, volunteers or parents of children involved in the sport, USA Bowling will provide coaching seminars designed to teach basic bowling coaching skills.
The USA Bowling Coaching program already has scheduled 52 seminars throughout the country this fall, and additional seminars will be added. The seminars are a continuation of the program started last year that drew more than 1,100 participants.
The seminars are free, are three hours in length and include on-lane and classroom instruction. The seminars are designed to teach volunteers the skills necessary to teach the fundamentals of bowling to youths. The curriculum is basic and non-intimidating, and is perfect for bowling novices such as parents/guardians, youth directors or activists who want to learn more about how to teach kids to bowl.

RVP added to coaching certification
Beginning this fall, coaches seeking certification at any level through the United States Bowling Congress will have to be approved through the Registered Volunteer Program (RVP). The USBC Coaching Certification and Development team also announced that current coaches will need to be approved through RVP as part of their continuing education process.
USBC implemented RVP, a background screening program, to help provide a safe environment for USBC Youth members. The program ensures the USBC is doing everything it can to protect youth bowlers. As the NGB for bowling, USBC follows guidelines of the United States Olympic Committee and the USOC launched its SafeSport program earlier this year.

Catch the Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships on CBS Sports Network
The USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships and the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships will be part of a series that will air nationally this May on CBS Sports Network.
It is the first time in the history of the event that the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships will be televised and all shows will air on CBS Sports Network. Dave LaMont will handle play-by-play, while USBC spokesman and Team USA member Chris Barnes will provide color commentary for the shows.
CBS Sports Network will air the one-hour shows, which will be shown in high definition for the first time, each Friday at 10 p.m. Eastern. The Intercollegiate Team Championships and Intercollegiate Singles Championships annually crown national champions in college bowling and this year marks the first time the events have been held together.

2012 USBC Convention recap
The 2012 USBC Annual Meeting concluded with the election of four board members and the legislative session where 13 proposals were voted on by member delegates, including the rejection of proposals related to membership dues. The USBC Convention and Annual Meeting was held over a three-day period at the Arlington Convention Center and the Sheraton Arlington Hotel.
Re-elected to the USBC Board of Directors were Libbi Fletcher of Warren, Mich., and Tamoria Adams of Charlotte, N.C. They are joined by newcomers Steven O’Brien of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Karen Jost of Alexandria, Va. The new board members will begin their three-year terms starting Aug. 1.
Also joining the board for 2012-13 will be Dan Patterson of Buffalo, N.Y., who was chosen to be an athlete director. Patterson replaces Vernon Peterson of Lake Wales, Fla.
The USBC Youth Committee selected Dominick Savage of Missouri City, Texas, to join its committee starting with the 2012-13 season. Savage was eligible to join the committee because of his selection as USBC Male Youth Ambassador of the Year.
Two bylaws, three league rules and one tournament rule were approved. Rejected amendments included Bylaws B2, B3 and B4, which proposed adjusting dues caps for national, state and local associations.
In addition to the USBC Annual Meeting, USBC staff members conducted a series of workshops designed to help association officials perform their duties more effectively, including Association Officers: Roles and Responsibilities, the Registered Volunteer Program and Using Technology to Communicate Effectively. USBC adds Regional Development Facility
The United States Bowling Congress recently added its third USBC Coaching Regional Development Facility to provide a more economical way for coaches and bowlers to have access to certification conferences and high-level coaching.
The Bowl to Win Pro Shop at Shepherds All Star Lanes in Salt Lake City, Utah, led by USBC Gold coach Karen Pullman, joins Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, Fla., and Turbo Tech in Chesterfield, Mich., as Regional Development Facilities.
The USBC Coaching Development and Certification team is working with industry partners to create Regional Development Facilities around the country so bowlers and coaches can train with certified high-quality coaches and continue their education. The facilities will host coaching conferences, clinics and mentoring programs to continue to build the relationship between bowlers, coaches and USBC.
Regional Development Facilities are being developed as a way for bowlers and coaches to receive quality coaching without having to travel so far from home.

IBM/HF satellite museum rolls into Reno
With the grand opening of the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame's first satellite museum at the National Bowling Stadium, more than 5,000 years of bowling history has rolled into Reno.
The IBM/HF teamed up with the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority to bring this exhibit to The Biggest Little City in the World. The RSCVA helps to promote convention and tourism business for Washoe County.
The IBM/HF satellite museum will be open for public viewing during regular NBS hours and is free of charge to tour.

Preble, Bohanan finalists for USOC awards
The United States Olympic Committee announced the finalists for the annual USOC Coach of the Year awards and the bowling industry is well-represented.
Fresno State men's bowling coach Chris Preble is a finalist for Volunteer Coach of the Year and, for the second consecutive year, Nicholas Bohanan, the sports performance specialist for the United States Bowling Congress, has been named a finalist for the Doc Counsilman Science Award.
Preble and Bohanan are among the final three in their respective divisions. The recipients of the awards will be announced during a welcome reception June 19 as part of the 2012 National Coaching Conference at the NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis.
