USBC selects five youth members for Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship in 2025

ARLINGTON, Texas – Five United States Bowling Congress Youth members were selected to receive an Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship in 2025 in recognition of their academic achievements and contributions to their communities.

Recipients were selected by the USBC Youth Advisory Group from submitted applications, and each will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The scholarship, which is part of USBC’s Scholarship Management and Account Reporting for Tenpins (SMART) program, is named in honor of the legendary hall of famer who was dedicated to helping youth bowlers.

The five recipients of an Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship are:

* Chrislaina Anderson, Santa Maria, California
* Matthew Cutrell, Maryland Heights, Missouri
* Aubrey Garton, Olivehill, Tennessee
* Ethan Leicht, Florence, Kentucky
* Tamia Yeager, Tacoma, Washington

Anderson is a senior at Orcutt Academy Charter High School where she’s maintained a 4.79 weighted GPA; however, she’s already earned associate’s degrees in both math and science from Allan Hancock College as well, graduating in 2023 at age 15 to become the institution’s youngest graduate to date.

When not in the classroom, Anderson dedicates her time and effort to several extracurricular activities, including the Orcutt Academy Marching Band – where she is a drum major – Jazz Band, Jazz Band Ensemble, Debate Club, Civic Leaders of America, Junior State of America, MEDLIFE, Aviation Club and many others.

Anderson is new to the sport of bowling as this season marks her first as a league competitor; nevertheless, she’s already making significant strides, recording a high game of 179 and a high three-game series of 403 (a 134.3 average), which is well above her current average of 109.

Cuttrell is a 2024 graduate of Pattonville High School. There, he established a weighted GPA of greater than 4.5 while taking multiple honors and Advanced Placement courses and recorded a composite score of 34 on the ACT – 36 is the highest score possible.

In addition to his academic prowess, Cuttrell was impressive outside the classroom as well, taking part in dozens of clubs and extracurricular activities, including Pattonville National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, Physics Club, Robotics Club, cross country, tennis team and bowling club.

On the lanes, Cuttrell holds an average of just under 140, has a high game of 207 and a high three-game series of 518. Those contributions helped Cuttrell and his teammates win the Pattonville League during the 2023-2024 season.

Garton currently is completing her senior year at Hardin County High School, where she is ranked No. 1 in her class of 230 students thanks to having earned straight A’s throughout her high school career.

Despite the considerable time and effort she has dedicated to perfecting her studies, Garton has been heavily involved outside the academic arena as well. She has participated in National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and has achieved mastery level on the end-of-course exams multiple times in English, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Biology.

Garton also has been active in student council, youth leadership, FFA and the Lady Tiger bowling team. Her talent on the lanes is considerable, as is evident by her 192 average, high game of 298 and high three-game series of 763.

Leicht, the 2024 recipient of USBC’s Annual Zeb Scholarship, is a standout student at Randall K. Cooper High School, where he has achieved straight A’s and established a 4.857 weighted GPA despite taking on a courseload featuring multiple honors and AP classes. Also, he is ranked in the top 10 in his graduating class of 350 students, and he scored a composite score of 30 on the ACT.

Equally impressive is Leicht’s track record of involvement in clubs, extracurricular activities and community organizations. He received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2022, was scouted and selected to be a member of Duke University’s Talent Identification Program and has received academic and athletic bars and letters in multiple subjects and activities.

Leicht only began bowling during his sophomore year, but he quickly became a standout performer in that arena as well, progressing from scores under 100 in the early days to a high game of 205 by the end of that season. Leicht’s efforts and those of his teammates allowed the Randall K. Cooper Varsity team to earn a runner-up finish at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Boys’ State Bowling Championship in 2023.

Yeager is a two-time Dexter High School All-American Award recipient, having earned the honor during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons. She graduated from Spanaway Lake High School with a 3.89 GPA despite taking multiple honors and AP classes and now is enrolled at Pierce College.

Yeager’s track record of volunteerism is long and distinguished as, over the years, she has dedicated her time and efforts to multiple organizations and causes in and around the Tacoma area, including arranging a Spanaway Lake High School Bowling Equipment Drive, raising money for youth bowling leagues in the area and helping her mother package food bags for homeless backpacks under the TwinStar Community Foundation.

Despite spending considerable time and effort helping others off the lanes, Yeager’s bowling resume has continued to grow. She finished 23rd out of 545 bowlers in the U18 Girls Division at the 2024 Junior Gold Championships in Detroit. Also, she was the 2024 U18 Girls champion at the Storm Youth Championships Idaho, where she took gold on the short pattern and bronze on the medium pattern as well as the 2024 Washington State Queens Princess Division champion.

In addition to being a USBC Youth member, applicants for the Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship must have been a senior in high school or a college student and have a record of strong community involvement and academic achievements as well as financial need. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
