USBC Youth Open comes to a close

ARLINGTON, Texas – When Tylor Greene of Davison, Mich., fired a 300 game during team event in the early stages of the United States Bowling Congress Youth Open, little did he know the perfect game not only would help his team capture the Scratch Division team title, but also help him win the Scratch All-Events title.
The USBC Youth Open wrapped up July 28 at Expo Bowl in Indianapolis and the tournament will award more than $100,000 in scholarships. Scores are unofficial pending verification; official results will be posted on BOWL.com.
Greene and his teammates on the Flint All Stars had games of 825, 814 and 901 for a 2,540 total to edge PFC of O’Fallon, Mo., (2,509) for the four-player team title in the 760 & over scratch division. Greene led the way with a 747 series, including a 300 in the final game. Andrew Anderson of Holly, Mich., added a 691 series, Quinton Burnette of Flint, Mich., had a 570 series and Grant McNally of Davison, Mich., had a 532 series for the team on July 13.
“I knew we had a big lead,” said Greene, who finished with a 2,110 total for the all-events title. “This feels good. I’m glad I bowled well all three sets.”
Greene said his 300 game was a little different from the previous times he’s had perfect games.
“I was really nervous,” said Greene, who won the 2011 North Pointe High School Singles Championships. “I’ve had a lot of them, but it was very nerve-wracking.”
The team used the Youth Open to prepare for this year’s North Pointe Junior Gold Championships, also held in Indianapolis. Greene teamed with Anderson to finish second in doubles in the 380 & over scratch division with a 1,372 total, and each would reach bracket play at the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships the following week. Anderson went on to finish second at Junior Gold and earn a spot on Junior Team USA in 2013.
Nicholas Corbin and Zachary Weidman of Indianapolis edged out Greene and Anderson to win the Scratch Doubles title with 1,376.
The Youth Open team and all-events titles continued a big year for Greene, who will attend Robert Morris University in Chicago in the fall. He won his second consecutive Michigan high school state singles title and helped Davison to the state high school semifinals.
In the other scratch divisions (190 and over) at the Youth Open, 2013 Junior Team USA member Gregory Young of Viera, Fla., had a 769 series to win singles, and Kaila Ryan of Dayton, Ohio, had a 1,926 total to claim the girls all-events title.
The Youth Open is a non-qualifying national tournament for USBC Youth members. Competitors are placed in one of four divisions based on average, not age or gender, and they bowl nine games total – three games each of singles, doubles and four-player team. All scores are scratch. Boys and girls compete together on the lanes and in the tournament standings, except for all-events.
