Varano advances to medal round in singles at 2022 U21 World Championships

HELSINGBORG, Sweden - Junior Team USA's Victoria Varano has advanced to the semifinals in singles competition at the 2022 International Bowling Federation U21 World Championships.
Varano, from Stony Point, New York, put herself in position to move to the medal round at Olympia Bowling after working her way to a three-way tie for two spots in her match-play group. She posted a 5-2 record to accumulate 15 points (three points for each win) to join Malaysia's Alyaa Addini and Slovenia's Alja Bergauer in a one-game roll-off to determine which two players would advance.
Addini earned to top spot for Group A after posting 199, and Varano advanced with 153. Bergauer recorded a 122.
In Group B, Singapore's Colleen Pee earned her place in the medal round after going 7-0 in match play to finish with 21 points. Puerto Rico's Zoriani Reyes also advanced after winning a roll-off against Sweden's Nora Johansson, 238-228.
The medal round for women's singles will feature Varano against Pee in one semifinal, with Addini and Reyes squaring off in the other match. The winners of each semifinal, which will be contested in a best-of-three format, will advance to the finals to bowl for the gold medal.
The finals also will feature a best-of-three format to determine the champion.
All competitors at the 2022 IBF U21 World Championships bowled six games of qualifying to determine the top 16 advancers in both the women's and men's division.
Advancers were placed into one of two match-play groups based on seeding and bowled one match against each athlete in their group. Points were awarded based of a win (three points), tie (one point) or loss (zero points), and the two top in each group, based on points, advanced to the medal round.
All medal rounds at the 2022 U21 World Championships will take place June 29.
Varano and Jillian Martin of Stow, Ohio, advanced to match play in the women's division for Junior Team USA. Martin qualified eighth with a 1,269 total, while Varano tied for 10th with 1,250.
Martin was placed in the same match-play group as Varano and finished with 3-4 record for nine points.
Paige Peters of Toms River, New Jersey, and Mabel Cummins of Hermitage, Tennessee, missed the top 16 in the women's division, finishing 22nd (1,200) and 24th (1,188), respectively.
On the men's side, Spencer Robarge of Springfield, Missouri, and Tyrell Ingalls of Loganville, Georgia, advanced to match play but were unable to move to the medal round.
Both Robarge and Ingalls went 3-4 in match play to finish tied for fifth place in their groups with nine points.
Robarge qualified in seventh place with a 1,402 total, and Ingalls was 13th with 1,368. Julian Salinas of Richmond, Texas, finished 20th with 1,362, and Alec Keplinger of Coldwater, Michigan, was 31st with 1,341.
The men's semifinals will include an all-Sweden match featuring Carl Eklund against Robin Ilhammar, while Malaysia's Ahmad Azriq will face Korea's Junghun Bae.
Up next for Junior Team USA is Baker doubles, starting Friday at Olympia Bowling. Qualifying in the women's division will take place Friday, while the men's division will get underway Saturday. Match play will take place Sunday to determine the finalists.
