Fresh off his Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open win last week, Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer, Pete Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., averaged 233 to earn top qualifier honors Tuesday for the PBA50 Fountain Valley Open presented by Track at Fountain Bowl.

Weber, who is trying for his second PBA50 Tour title of the season and fifth of his career, led qualifying with a 3,728 16-game overall pinfall total bowling games of 204, 196, 237, 259, 241, 258, 235 and 256 in the second round.

“Today, I was having to deal with the (lane condition) transition at the start of the block, but the lanes started to break down to my advantage,” said the 37-time PBA Tour titlist. “Overall, I’m really happy with my game right now. I just need to keep in mind that for match play the conditions will change a little differently than in qualifying, but other than that I should be in good shape.”

Weber will lead a field of 34 bowlers who will compete in Wednesday’s match play that will determine the top five for the stepladder finals schedule for 7 p.m. PT. All of tomorrow’s action can be seen on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame.

Weber won the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open last Friday by defeating Eric Forkel of Henderson, Nev., 224-212, in the title match to join fellow Hall of Famer Norm Duke as the only players to win the U.S. Open on both the PBA and PBA50 Tours.

“I didn’t feel too bad on Saturday but Sunday I was sore,” said Weber, who bowled 50 grueling games last week to make the Senior U.S. Open finals. “What was kind of strange is usually my hand is the first thing to go after so many games – but my hand is fine – it’s the rest of my body that was feeling it.”

Weber topped 10-time PBA Tour winner Bryan Goebel of Shawnee, Kan., who finished the day in second 41 pins behind with a 3,687 pinfall. Goebel, has a career best finish of second and season’s best finish of third, which came in the Pasco County Florida Open.

Rounding out the top five heading into Wednesday’s match play were Miller High Life Classic winner Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y., 3,626; 1995 PBA Tour Quaker State Open champion Bob Spaulding, McKinney, Texas, 3,591, and Hall of Famer Brian Voss, Centennial, Colo., 3,584.

Former major league all-star pitcher and PBA50 Tour rookie John Burkett of Southlake, Texas qualified ninth to advance to match play. He finished the round with a 3,544 pinfall (221 average).

He’s in good position to improve on his season’s best 15th-place finish in last week’s Suncoast Senior U.S. Open.

First round leader, 67-year-old Ted Staikoff of Black Hawk, S.D., finished qualifying in sixth with a 3,582 pinfall. He’s hoping to improve on a career best third-place PBA50 Tour finish. If he can win he would become the oldest player to win a PBA50 Tour event. The current record is held by James Brenner at 66 years, 358 days.
