Wells leads after two rounds at Super Senior Classic

ARLINGTON, Texas – Willie Wells resides in Las Vegas, but he spends much of his time on the road competing in bowling events across the country. This week, near his former home of Plano, Texas, he’s the leader after two rounds at the 2013 International Training and Research Center Super Senior Classic.
Wells was consistent in the two six-game qualifying blocks, averaging more than 227 on the way to sets of 1,378 and 1,357 at the ITRC on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, for a 2,735 total.
The 65-year-old right-hander closed Thursday’s second round with a 247 game to hold off first-round leader, Kerry Painter of Fairbanks, Alaska, who is second with 2,709. Paul McCordic of Sugar Land, Texas, ended the day with the first perfect game of the inaugural ITRC Super Senior Classic and surged into third place with a 2,701 total for 12 games.
McCordic’s twin brother Pete, a two-time Professional Bowlers Association Tour titlist is one pin back at 2,700. The two turned 60 on Wednesday, just in time to be eligible for the Super Senior Classic.
“I was watching the scores at the end and knew if I struck out, I could get into the lead,” Wells said. “I am glad I was able to get there, and it does help my confidence for tomorrow. But when you’re in first, you’ve got a target on your back. I just hope I can keep bowling like I did today and stay there. Anytime there’s a stepladder, that’s where you want to be.”
After Thursday’s second round, the 28-player field was cut to the top eight bowlers, who will return Friday morning (10 a.m. EDT) for the four-game cashers' round to determine the five players for the stepladder finals Friday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. All remaining competition will be broadcast live on BowlTV.
The Super Senior Classic includes USBC members age 60 and above competing at the one-of-a-kind ITRC.
