Wisconsin bowlers make early statement at OC

RENO, Nev. - Ed Seliga of Kenosha, Wis., has been under the weather for more than six weeks, but he now feels much better after taking the lead in three events at the USBC Open Championships.
The 51-year-old right-hander bounced back from a disappointing Opening-Day team event and now holds the top spot in Regular Doubles, Regular Singles and Regular All-Events.
Seliga averaged 239 on the way to sets of 697 and 737 at the National Bowling Stadium on Saturday. He teamed up with Chris Galovits of West Allis, Wis., for a 1,408 doubles total and finished the weekend with a 2,016 all-events effort.
"I've been fighting this cold for about six weeks, and of all my tournaments, this is the worst I've felt physically, but the best I've felt on the lanes, at least during doubles and singles," said Seliga, who started his 12th trip to the Open Championships with a 582 series in team. "You want to be feeling well to be able to do your best. I definitely was concerned, but there have been moments where I didn't feel as bad. Taking the lead helps, too."
Scott Hartnell is second in Regular Singles with 677, while Derek Hartnell is second in Regular All-Events with 1,953. The two, both from Kenosha, also are second in Regular Doubles with 1,348.
Galovits rolled a 711 series on the way to the doubles lead and added 645 in singles and 596 in team for a 1,952 all-events total, which is third overall.
"We've been bowling doubles together for a while, and one of us seems to have a good set, while the other one struggles," Galovits said. "All four of us on our pair today played the same line and communicated really well during doubles and singles. We made the right moves and adjustments, and we were finally able to put up a good set."
Seliga and Galovits have bowled doubles together for a dozen years, but Galovits almost didn't make it to Reno for his 18th Open Championships appearance.
The 44-year-old right-hander had decided it would be financially smarter to skip the 2011 tournament and regroup for 2012. He even secured a substitute for the year, but when his replacement was forced to back out, his wife, Michele, agreed he should go ahead and make the trip.
Normally, they'd bowl a week or two into the tournament, but because of this year's late start, they ended up on the opening squad. While they didn't have the chance to scout the lanes and see what other teams were doing, they were able to do so before doubles and singles, and it clearly helped.
"Watching what other people are doing is part of our routine, so not being able to do that for team this year was a little different," Seliga said. "We did get to watch a little bit today, and that helped. Usually for doubles and singles, though, you just have to feel your way around based on where you finished in team. I did that, and it worked out. I think the shot is extremely playable, so I don't think my score will hold up for long, but I'm glad to be up there now."
In Tuesday's early team event, Sport Bowl Pro Shop of Middleton, Wis., put together games of 992, 1,042 and 972 and moved into the top spot in Regular Team with a 3,006 total.
Joe Kick paced the group with a 667 series and was followed by Rick Thomas (663), David Rasmussen (618), Richard Thomas (539) and Chad Kuehmichel (519).
"It's a great feeling to walk onto the biggest stage in bowling and walk away the leader," said Rick Thomas, who is the manager of Middleton Sport Bowl. "We really tried to work together as a team and break the lanes down systematically to make them playable, and to some degree, we were successful in that."
