BATON ROUGE, La. - Wisconsin's continued success at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships has been well documented, and another team from the Badger State made a run at the top of the leaderboard Friday night.

Bowlingfordumdums of Oak Creek, Wis., started with games of 1,096 and 1,169 and had the lead in sight with one frame to go at the Baton Rouge River Center.

The group managed just three strikes in its final frame, however, and fell short, finishing with 1,111 and a 3,376 total, which is second overall. Nicholas J's Pro Shop 2 of La Crosse, Wis., has held the lead in Regular Team since March 5 with 3,401.

Greg Thomas led the charge Friday with a 754 series and was followed by Bob Davidson (718), 2004 Team All-Events champion Don Yoshihara (687), Anthony Oliva (627) and Jason Williams (590).

While the group didn't take the lead, Davidson was exceptionally proud of the effort the team displayed.

"It feels good," Davidson said. "We finished fifth in Albuquerque (N.M.) in 2008, and that was great, and now we're trying to get a win. We still have a chance to win Team All-Events. I actually drilled a new ball before team because I really had no look during our practice session. Our communication was really good, and I think our game plan worked well for both teams. I'm really proud of how we did. We threw some strikes, and there were a couple bad ones in there, too, but I'm proud of the guys. We all worked well together."

Davidson and his teammates had the help of a talented companion team that included former Professional Bowlers Association stars Doug Kent and Robert Smith, along with 1999 USBC Masters champion Brian Boghosian.

Kent, a 10-time PBA Tour champion, rolled a 691 series and led his Stability Strikes team to a 3,149 total. He was followed by Alex Aguiar (656), Smith, a seven-time PBA Tour titlist (629), Kenneth Muscato (608) and Boghosian (565).
