Wisconsin-Whitewater men, Wichita State women lead at 2018 Hoosier Classic

INDIANAPOLIS - The Wisconsin-Whitewater men and four-time defending champion Wichita State women lead after the opening day of qualifying at the 2018 Hoosier Classic, the final Tier 1 of the 2017-2018 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season.
A total of 78 men's teams and 66 women's teams bowled six traditional games at Western Bowl on Saturday, and all teams will return Sunday for 15 Baker games to determine the eight teams in each division that will advance to the match-play bracket.
The Wisconsin-Whitewater men fired 1,273 in their opening game to set the pace and held the top spot throughout Saturday's round, finishing with a 6,507 total, a 216.9 average. Wichita State sits in second with 6,476, and Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah (6,455), Calumet (6,407) and Lindenwood (6,360) also are in the top five.
Defending men's champion Midland is 19th after Saturday's round with 6,022.
Alex Glinski of Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah rolled 278 in his final game to earn the top spot in the men's individual standings, finishing his six game-block with a 1,429 total, a 238. 1 average. Wichita State's Cortez Schenck was second with 1,407, while Vincennes' Tyler Perry (1,391), Pikeville's Matthew Cleary (1,385) and Davenport's Sean Taylor (1,360) followed in the standings.
On the women's side, Wichita State vaulted into the lead after rolling 1,089 in its final game to finish with 6,138. Newman sits in second place with 6,102, and Robert Morris-Illinois was third with 6,068. St. Ambrose (5,978) and Notre Dame-Ohio (5,934) finished Saturday's round in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Robert Morris-Illinois' Mattie Brandos finished with the top individual score, posting 1,272, a 212 average. Webber International's Caitlyn Johnson was second with 1,260, and St. Francis-Illinois' Abby Ragsdale (1,259), Notre Dame-Ohio's Alisha Noon (1,255) and Wichita State's Sydney Brummett (1,253) also made the all-tournament team.
Competition will resume Sunday at 7:30 a.m. Eastern and be broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.
