WSC: Team USA sends four to quarters

Team USA's four players went unbeaten in their matches Monday as they secured spots in Tuesday's quarterfinals at the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Singles Championship in Limassol, Cyprus.

1 World Singles logoAll four U.S. players had first-round byes and only had to bowl one match Monday with each of them advancing in the best-of-five single-elimination match-play bracket. Kelly Kulick and Tommy Jones both won in 3-0 sweeps, while Shannon O'Keefe and Chris Barnes were taken to the distance in 3-2 wins.

Barnes survived a tough match with Malaysia's Zulmazran Zulkifli to stay alive in the tournament. The Team USA star found himself down 2-1 and won the final two games 277-256 and 259-236 to advance.

O'Keefe pulled out a 3-2 win over Canada's Isabelle Rioux. After taking the first two games, O'Keefe allowed Rioux to even up the match before winning the decider 255-203.

Kulick easily dispatched of the Netherlands' Wendy Kok with wins of 264-222, 269-185 and 238-192. Jones took down Denmark's Thomas Larsen, taking victories of 267-243, 217-193 and 206-192.

In the semifinals, Jones will battle England's Stuart Williams, while Barnes takes on Qatar's Khaled Al Dossari. Kulick will face Sweden's Joline Persson-Planefors, while O'Keefe laces up against Malaysia's Esther Cheah.
