WYC: Kent reaches medal round

Junior Team USA member Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., qualified for the medal round in boys’ singles at the 2012 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Youth Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday.
Kent closed with games of 246 and 244 to lead the final qualifying block with a six-game pinfall total of 1,317. He tied Australia’s Sam Cooley, who bowled in the first block, for the fourth and final spot in the semifinals; Kent advanced based on a higher score in the final game (244 to Cooley’s 236).
Kent will take on top qualifier Basil Low of Singapore in Tuesday’s semifinals at the Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center. Low set the tournament qualifying record with a 1,447 pinfall total (241.50 average). Shusaku Asato, center, of Japan will face Ryu Ji-Hoon, left, of Korea in the other semifinal match.
In the girls’ semifinals, Malaysia’s Hee Kar Ten, the top qualifier, will face Cristina Rodriguez of Puerto Rico, and Kim Seon-Jeong of Korea will meet Juliana Franco of Colombia. The semifinal winners will bowl for the title while the semifinal losers will share third place.
Junior Team USA had three other bowlers competing in singles on Monday. Chris Via of Springfield, Ohio, and Zack Hattori of Las Vegas bowled on the first squad of the day and finished 22nd and 72nd, respectively. Andrew Koff of Miami, who won the all-events gold medal at the 2010 World Youth Championships in Helsinki, Finland, bowled on the final squad with Kent and finished 60th.
Following the singles title matches on Tuesday, the doubles event will start with the girls division. The boys’ doubles squads and the doubles medal round for both girls and boys are scheduled for Wednesday.
The World Youth Championships runs through July 3. Medals will be awarded in five events – singles, doubles, team, all-events and Masters match play.
