Defending champ Bohn remains undefeated at U22 Masters; Brunner still unbeaten at U22 Queens

Defending U22 Masters champion Brandon Bohn of Jackson, New Jersey, reacts to a strike during his 469-341 victory over Dylan Jablonski during Round 3 of match play at the 2025 U22 Masters, which is being contested at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Michigan. Bohn's victory allowed him to keep his title defense hopes alive and remain one of just four undefeated bowlers remaining at this year's tournament.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Defending champion Brandon Bohn of Jackson, New Jersey, was one of four bowlers who remained undefeated on the opening day of match play at the 2025 United States Bowling Congress U22 Masters on Sunday, while Junior Team USA’s Morgan Brunner of Gobles, Michigan, and three other talented young women went 3-0 during bracket play at the U22 Queens.

Bohn maintained a perfect record and kept his U22 Masters title defense hopes very much alive by collecting victories over Chris Bald of Raleigh, North Carolina (406-399), Brandon Leavitt of Novi, Michigan (427-402), and Dylan Jablonski of Canton, Michigan (469-341), during three rounds of two-game, total-pinfall matches at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park on Sunday.

Thanks to those efforts, the 20-year-old left-hander, who is a three-time Junior Gold champion, past member of Team USA and current member of Junior Team USA, now sits just one win away from punching his ticket to the U22 Masters stepladder finals for the second year in row.

To get that win, Bohn will have to get past Nicholas Sternes of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, when U22 Masters match play resumes at Thunderbowl Lanes on Monday morning at 9 a.m. Eastern.

Sternes moved into position to take a shot at the defending champ thanks to wins against Nathan Stefanski of Almont, Michigan (427-385), Josh Hammons of Topeka, Kansas (425-342), and Ryan Julian of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (402-400).

On the other side of the U22 Masters Winners Bracket, Junior Team USA’s Braden Mallasch of Waupaca, Wisconsin, will take on Dmitri Richardson of Wichita, Kansas,

Both men went 3-0 on Sunday with Mallasch besting Keaton Ostrowski of Rochester, New York (359-350), Andru Blaney of Hughesville, Maryland (411-358), and fellow Junior Team USA bowler Hayden Hale of Pinckney, Michigan (419-378), while Richardson got the best of Zachary Smullen of Frisco, Texas (397-378), David Hayes of Terre Haute, Indiana (457-403), and No. 1 seed Nate Trentler of Phoenix, Maryland (429-337).

While only Bohn, Sternes, Mallasch and Richardson were able to go undefeated on Sunday, they were not the only competitors who advanced to Monday’s final day of competition at the 2025 U22 Masters.

Luke Winter of Appleton, Wisconsin, Alexander Horton of Douglassville, Pennsylvania, Trentler and Julian all kept themselves alive in the Elimination Bracket.

Winter will take on Trentler, and Horton will square off against Julian on Monday morning while Bohn, Sternes, Mallasch and Richardson do battle in the Winners Bracket.

One round later, the two remaining undefeated bowlers will compete to establish the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds for the U22 Masters stepladder finals, which will be contested at the Strobl Arena inside Thunderbowl Lanes on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the two bowlers who lost during Round 4 of Winners Bracket action to start the day will take on the winners of Monday’s first Elimination Bracket contests, with the two who survive that encounter moving on to one final match to determine who comes out of the Elimination Bracket to earn the third and final spot in the stepladder finals.

Bohn started 3-0 en route to his victory at the inaugural U22 Masters in 2024; however, he then lost to Bryce Oliver of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, during Round 4 to drop into the Elimination Bracket and put his tournament survival in jeopardy.

Even though he fought his way into the stepladder and eventually exacted revenge by defeating Oliver twice to take home last year’s title, Bohn is hoping for an easier path on Monday because, as far as he’s concerned, this year’s tournament has already been hard enough.

“It feels good to be in this position, but I don’t know exactly how to put it into words because it’s been a whirlwind of a week,” Bohn said. “When you have qualifying and then match play, it’s like two tournaments. Once you cut to the top 32, it’s like a totally different event.

“I took what I learned from the first 14 games and from that first match and applied it to the next two, and here we are in the Round of 4 in the Winners Bracket.”

While Bohn was certainly pleased with the position he found himself in at the end of Sunday’s action, he was a bit disappointed to be there alone.

That’s because, at the start of the day, there were two other members of the Bohn family still competing at the U22 Masters and U22 Queens alongside him.

Older brother Justin, a former Junior Team USA member and the 2022 Junior Gold U20 Boys champion, and younger sister Sydney, who currently is on Junior Team USA and bowls collegiately for Vanderbilt University, both reached match play at this year’s tournaments as well; however, neither was able to advance to Monday’s final day of competition at their respective events.

“I wanted my sister to win more than I wanted to win myself,” Bohn said. “She will say that she doesn’t bowl or practice, but I know how hard she works. To see her get out here and lead a field like this at the U22 Queens but not get to keep it going, it hurts. Also, obviously, seeing Justin lose hurts as well. Now, I’m out here not only for me but also for the rest of my family, so we’re going to go out here tomorrow, try to have two more good matches and hopefully win one more game on the show.”

Junior Team USA bowler Morgan Brunner of Gobles, Michigan, posts up a shot during Sunday's match-play action at the 2025 U22 Queens. Brunner was one of four athletes in the U22 Queens field to get through Day 1 of matches undefeated.

U22 Queens Brackets

Brunner, a 20-year-old left-hander who bowls for Maryville University, will be hoping for the same during Monday’s final day of U22 Queens competition.

She was the 32nd and final match-play qualifier on Saturday, making the cut by a single pin after 14 games of qualifying.

Brunner bowled in the inaugural U22 Queens last year and was tied for second after qualifying, which made her an automatic selection for Junior Team USA 2025. This year, she’s taking full advantage of making the match-play field as she is one of four remaining undefeated women in the Winners Bracket heading into Monday’s action.

“Yesterday was a really hard day for me mentally,” Brunner said. “I thought I was completely out of the cut by the end of the day, and I was ready to pack up and go home. Then, I found out I had made the cut by one pin, so I knew I had to come in today with a different mindset. I told myself, ‘You made it in by one pin, so just run with that and see what happens.’ I just wanted to come in with the mentality that it’s a new day and to take advantage of it.”

Brunner started her day on Sunday by taking out Sydney Bohn, 339-314.

Next, Brunner dispatched No. 16 seed Morgan Kline of Myerstown, Pennsylvania, 400-387. In her final match on Sunday, Brunner raced out to a sizable lead over No. 25 Emma Punter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before hanging on for a 427-419 win.

Brunner, who just completed her sophomore year at Maryville, talked about how her collegiate experience has helped prepare her for events like this.

“Having Lauren and Matt Russo (both Team USA members) as coaches is very helpful,” Brunner said. “They give us a lot of knowledge regarding lane play and different resources we can use while we’re competing. I’m trying to keep the same mentality that I use in college – that getting nine is good, and I can work with that. Also, I try to make sure that I’m not getting stuck on something that happened last frame.”

Brunner’s first match on Monday will be against No. 21 seed Aleesha Oden of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Oden’s run through the Winners Bracket included wins over No. 12 Arianna Araujo of Palos Park, Illinois (415-359), No. 5 Alyssa Ballard (478-431) of Fort Worth, Texas, and No. 20 Mia Stolakis (407-396) of Worcester, Massachusetts.

Joining Brunner and Oden as the two other remaining undefeated players in match play are No. 22 Karina Capron of Fremont, Nebraska, and No. 23 Maia Struble of Anchorage, Alaska.

In addition to the four players remaining in the Winners Bracket, there also are four players left in the Elimination Bracket – No. 2 Erin Klemencic of Powder Springs, Georgia, No. 8 Keira Magsam of Gretna, Nebraska, No. 14 Carly Zuklin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Stolakis.

After losing her opening match to Brunner, Bohn was eliminated from the event when she lost her first match in the Elimination Bracket to Elizabeth Teuber, 406-360.

The final rounds of U22 Queens match play will kick off at 9 a.m. Eastern on Sunday morning from Thunderbowl Lanes and will be contested using the same format and according to the same schedule as that being employed at the U22 Masters, which was described above.

Once the three finalists at each event have been determined, U22 Queens stepladder finals action will be contested first, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern. The U22 Masters stepladder will get underway approximately 45 minutes after the completion of the U22 Queens stepladder. Both stepladders will be held at Strobl Arena inside Thunderbowl Lanes.

In addition to the first-place trophies, prize money and distinction of becoming just the second champions in each tournament’s history, competitors at the 2025 U22 Masters and U22 Queens are vying for a total of eight spots on Junior Team USA 2026.

Six of those berths have already been claimed as they went to the top three age-eligible finishers after the qualifying rounds at both the U22 Masters and U22 Queens and to each tournament’s champion.

Trentler, Hammons and Blaney punched their tickets on the U22 Masters side, while Sydney Bohn, Klemencic and Magsam collected the first three available Junior Team USA berths up for grabs at the 2025 U22 Queens.

The final two spots will go to this year’s U22 Masters and U22 Queens champions. If the champion has already acquired a spot or is not age eligible, the fourth and final Junior Team USA position up for grabs at each event will be given to the next-highest age-eligible finisher based upon total pinfall during qualifying.

Age-eligible athletes will be those who have not reached their 21st birthday by Jan. 1, 2026.

All rounds of competition at the 2025 U22 Masters and U22 Queens have and will continue to be streamed live exclusively on BowlTV.
