Maine bowler flies into lead at 2014 Women's Championships

RENO, Nev. - A well-timed layover allowed Mallory Nutting of Monmouth, Maine, to accept an opportunity to compete in the team event at the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, and that made it possible for her to catapult into the lead in Division 2 All-Events.

The 28-year-old right-hander rolled the three highest sets of her USBC Women's Championships career this weekend, 631 in singles, 615 in doubles and 607 in team, to finish with a 1,853 total. Debra Pahdocony of Shawnee, Okla., previously held the top spot with 1,799.

Nutting prepared for her time on the championship lanes by competing in her state tournament prior to her trip to The Biggest Little City in the World. She was surprised to see that her career-best effort placed her at the top of the standings.

"I was pretty shocked," said Nutting, who made her fourth Women's Championships appearance. "This is my first 1,800 in a tournament, so I picked a good time to do it."

Nutting's trip originally was scheduled so she could compete at the USBC Open Championships, being held across town at the National Bowling Stadium, but she decided to take advantage of both national tournaments being held in the same city and used the  BOWL.com Sub Board to find a group that needed a bowler for doubles and singles at the Women's Championships.

She hoped to find a team to compete with as well, and while on a layover in Las Vegas during her journey from Boston to Reno, she received a message asking if she'd be able to sub on a team later that day.

Nutting was able to make it to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center just in time and now finds herself in position to take home a national title. She'll eagerly wait to see if her score is enough. The tournament, which kicked off April 11, will conclude June 30.

"It was a long day of traveling," Nutting said. "But I had an absolutely wonderful time with the folks I bowled with. It would be pretty incredible if it held on to win."

Bowlers competing in Division 2 have entering averages between 175-189.
