Mexico's Carlos Denot takes early lead in 2025 USBC Super Senior Classic

STANDINGS AFTER ROUND 1 OF QUALIFYING

LAS VEGAS – Mexico’s Carlos Denot made the most of his first appearance at the United States Bowling Congress Super Senior Classic Thursday by averaging 237.67 for his six games to take the early lead at Sam’s Town Bowling Center.

Denot, 60, totaled 1,426 pins in Round 1 and has an eight-pin lead over two-time Super Senior Classic champion Ron Mohr of Las Vegas. Bowling on A Squad, Denot didn’t have a game below 217 and had a high game of 253.

“Yesterday during practice, I felt very comfortable,” Denot said. “But today, during the 10-minute practice right before we started, I was having some trouble sliding in the area where I was practicing yesterday. So, I decided to play a little more of an easier shot for me. I was playing between 3 and 6 with my target and just moved a little left as the block went along. I never changed balls and stayed with urethane all the way.”

The right-hander is originally from Mexico City, but spends most of his time these days in either Torreón or Mérida, Mexico. Prior to turning 60, Denot competed “two or three times” in the USBC Senior Masters but never cashed in that event.

Denot realizes it’s early and that he’ll have to keep working to maintain his position.

“It’s very good starting in first place,” Denot said. “But really, it doesn’t mean anything. I think I am going to start tomorrow where I finished today as far as where I was playing and what ball I was using. But I have more options with the kind of shots I can play if I don’t feel comfortable during practice.”

Mohr, a 69-year-old right-hander who won this event in 2017 and 2022, finished with games of 269, 279 and 234 (782) to lead B Squad with a 1,418 pinfall and 236.33 average. The USBC and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer owns 11 PBA50 titles and is the all-time leader with five PBA60 wins.

Tom Adcock of Forsyth, Illinois, started with games of 264 and 278, posted a 265 in Game 5, and went on to finish Round 1 in third place (1,408).

Rounding out the top five in the 208-player field are 2018 USBC Senior Masters champion Chris Warren of Plano, Texas (1,407) and Finland’s Timo Raatikainen (1,399). Warren started with consecutive 258 games and never had a game lower than 212, while Raatikainen started with a 288 game.

Competition will resume Friday at noon Eastern as the bowlers on B Squad hit the fresh 39-foot lane condition for their final six games of qualifying. A Squad will bowl on the burn starting at 5 p.m. Eastern.

The top 52 bowlers after 12 games of qualifying will advance to Saturday’s cashers’ round.

After six games, Marty Deh of San Jose, California, and John Burkett of Fort Worth, Texas, are tied for 52nd (1,272). Defending Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, New York, is just two pins behind Deh and Burkett in 54th place (1,270).

The advancers will bowl another six-game block, starting Saturday at noon Eastern, with total pinfall for 18 games helping place the top 12 into one of two match-play groups.

Group 1 will feature the qualifiers who placed as an odd seed (1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11), while Group 2 will consist of the even seeds (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12). The match-play round will get underway Saturday at 6 p.m. Eastern.

Each participant in match play will bowl six head-to-head games in their group, including a final position round. Each victory will be worth 30 bonus pins.

At the end of match play, the top finisher in each group – based on 24-game totals including bonus pins – will earn a spot in Sunday’s main stepladder finals. The player with the top pinfall total will be the No. 1 seed for the main stepladder, while the other group leader will be the No. 2 seed.

The second-, third- and fourth-place finisher in each match-play group will have the opportunity to work their way into the main stepladder through a group stepladder Sunday at Sam’s Town. The group stepladder will begin at noon Eastern.

The bowlers in the third and fourth position in each group will face each other in a single-game match, with the winner advancing to take on the competitor in the second position. The winners of the final match in the group stepladder will advance to Sunday’s main stepladder and face each other in the opening match, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The winner of the 2025 Super Senior Classic will take home an $8,000 top prize, while the runner-up collects $6,550.

After the conclusion of the Super Senior Classic, the top bowlers age 50 and older will take to the lanes at Sam’s Town for the 2025 USBC Senior Masters.

The Senior Masters is the second major championship on the 2025 PBA50 Tour schedule and will be held from June 2-8.
