September 15, 2014
CALI, Colombia - In a tight race to the finish, Team USA earned the gold and silver medals in the trios event Monday at the 2014 Pan American Bowling Confederation Women's Championships.
Team USA's Shannon O'Keefe, Danielle McEwan and Missy Parkin combined to shoot 3,885 to capture the gold medal at the Cali Bowling Coliseum. Teammates Liz Johnson, Shannon Pluhowsky and Kelly Kulick took the silver with 3,860.
Host Colombia finished 26 pins out of first and one pin out of second with 3,859 in what was a close battle until the final frame of the six-game event.
O'Keefe led the way for her trios team with a 1,400 total, while McEwan shot 1,260 and Parkin added 1,225.
"We feel really good about what we accomplished tonight and now we are ready to jump right into the team event tomorrow and win gold again," O'Keefe said. "Our looks are getting better each day, and we are settling in just at the right time."
The silver medal came down to the very last shot as Johnson struck on her final ball to secure second place for her trios team. Kulick shot 1,335, Pluhowsky fired 1,294 and Johnson had 1,231.
Colombia was led by Maria Jose Rodriguez with 1,308, while Rocio Restrepo shot 1,290. Clara Guerrero started the trios event with a perfect game and went on to total 1,261.
Four countries will qualify for the 2015 Pan American Games this week as part of the PABCON Women's Championships. The combined all-events total of the top two bowlers from each non-qualified country will determine the top four that advance.
Eight countries have already qualified for the Pan American Games, which will feature 14 countries. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Venezuela have already secured spots.
There are seven countries competing in the PABCON Women's Championships that have yet to qualify and four will earn spots. Those countries are Aruba, the Bahamas, the United States, Guatemala, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
With just the team event remaining, Team USA is in prime position to qualify for the Pan American Games.
The competition moves to the team event, which will be contested starting at 10 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. All rounds of the PABCON Women's Championships are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.
